The St. Stephen's Memorial Episcopal Church is an historic Episcopal Church in Lynn in the State of Massachusetts . The parish is assigned to the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts . Erected in 1881, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in September 1979 under the name St. Stephen's Memorial Church and was declared a Historic District Contributing Property in April 1992 .

Architecture and equipment

St. Stephen's Memorial Episcopal Church was designed by the Boston architecture firm Ware & Van Brunt and built in 1880 and 1881. The outer walls were built from reddish granite from neighboring Swampscott , and details were made from stone from the Canadian province of Nova Scotia . The roof consists of red and occasionally gray slate . The steeple is about 40 meters (130 feet ) high and houses ten bells from the Meneely bell foundry. The glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany designed over 40 windows for the church together with various artists. For example, two designs each come from Francis Davis Millet and Augustus Saint-Gaudens . The windows are among the oldest surviving Tiffany windows in the world.

history

The construction of the church was financed by the textile entrepreneur Enoch R. Mudge, who wanted to preserve the memory of his children Charles R. Mudge, who died in the Battle of Gettysburg , and Fanny Olive Van Brunt. Construction costs were estimated at $ 150,000, but were significantly exceeded in the course of construction. The founder invested a total of around $ 250,000 in the construction. Mudge died in 1881, a month before the building was completed, which resulted in his funeral mass being the first service in the new church. A total of ten bells had been installed in the church tower by 1885. The parish of Lynn was one of the largest in the Episcopal Church in Massachusetts at the beginning of the 20th century, and the youth organizations in St. Stephen's were regarded as national models for the USA.

On the occasion of the third anniversary of the entry into the war the United States in the First World War gave Franklin D. Roosevelt , who later became President of the United States on April 11, 1920 in the St. Stephen's Memorial Episcopal Church a speech entitled The Problems of Peace ( German  The Problems of Peace ). Roosevelt, then Secretary of State in the Department of the Navy , had accepted an invitation from the Church pastor with whom he had studied at Harvard University .

The parish continued to grow steadily between the two world wars, which among other things led to the construction of a new parsonage and further alterations to the church. By the beginning of the Great Depression , the building was partially renovated and adapted to the building and fire protection regulations applicable at the time. For example, gas lighting has been replaced by electric light.

During the Second World War , a memorial altar was erected in the church for the war victims of the community. In the post-war years, among other things, the Sunday school facilities were expanded and modernized. In 1976 the parish had St. Stephen's Tower Apartments built to provide affordable housing for parishioners. In addition, several humanitarian and social organizations were founded or supported in the second half of the 20th century. From 2004, extensive renovation and refurbishment work was again carried out on St. Stephen's Memorial Episcopal Church with the help of the Essex National Historic Commission.
