St. Stephen is a city in Charlotte County in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . The population in 2011 was 4817 people.

St. Stephen is located on the lower reaches of the St. Croix River . On the opposite, southern side of the river is Calais in the US state of Maine . The border between Canada and the USA runs in the middle of the river. The New Brunswick Route127 runs through the middle of St. Stephen, the New Brunswick Route1 runs in a northern arc around the place.

history

Chocolate factory

The Passamaquoddy Indians were the first to inhabit the area. The first settlers from France explored the lower reaches of the St. Croix River in 1604, but it wasn't until 1784 that loyalists founded a settlement. The name of the city was probably chosen in honor of the deacon Stephen . The advantageous location on the river led to a strong economic upswing on both sides. Shipyards, docks and harbors were built, lumber and other goods were exported overseas. In 1871 the place received city rights. Despite a devastating fire that destroyed many buildings, the phase of the high-held economic until the beginning of World War II on, but then experienced a sharp decline.

New branches of the economy were created with the construction of a hydropower plant by NB Power , textile processing companies and a chocolate factory. A Chocolate Festival has traditionally been celebrated since 1985 , a Chocolate Museum was opened in 1999 , and in 2000 St. Stephen was named Canada's Chocolate Town .

Many historic buildings and plazas have been added to the List of historic places in Charlotte County, New Brunswick .
