The Roman Catholic Church of St. Thoma in the Bohemian Forest , also known as the Church of Corpus Christi , is located in Svatý Tomáš (German: St. Thomas ) in the municipality of Přední Výtoň ( Heuraffl ) in the Czech Republic, not far from the Austrian border near St. Oswald near Haslach . It belongs to the diocese of Budweis .

history

The Church of St. Thoma was built from 1257 to 1258 by the Witigonen Witiko I. von Krumau . In 1348 it was rebuilt based on the legacy of Peter I von Rosenberg and consecrated to the body of Christ . In 1361 St. Thoma was raised to a parish, but it was repealed in 1520 and was now a branch church of the parish of Deutsch Reichenau .

Since then it has also been a pilgrimage church until the pilgrimages to St. Thoma were abolished under Emperor Josef II , and from 1856 they took place again. In 1858, Johann Adolf II zu Schwarzenberg had the now dilapidated church rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style at his own expense. As a result of the Munich Agreement , the Reiterschlag community from 1939 to 1945, and thus the St. Thoma Church, belonged to the Rohrbach district in Upper Danube , after the Second World War it belonged again to Czechoslovakia . After 1945 the German-speaking population was expelled, the church was in the restricted area and gradually fell into disrepair.

After the Velvet Revolution of 1989 it was accessible again and from 1991 onwards it was extensively renovated at the instigation of the association founded by the expellee Johann Bertlwieser. In 1996 the bells were consecrated and in 1997 the church was consecrated by Bishop Antonín Liška from Budweis . The church is the only surviving religious building in Rychnůvek .

Today the church is a popular hiking destination and services are regularly held in St. Thoma from St. Oswald bei Haslach.
