Fritz Bertlwieser was born as the second of three sons of the Bohemian forests expellees Johann and Theresia Bertlwieser, who came from the purely German-speaking community Reiterschlag, parish Deutsch Reichenau near Friedberg, which was right next to the Austrian border. After the eviction in the 1950s, all the villages, houses and the parish church were razed to the ground. From 1972 he studied philosophy, theology and religious education at the University of Innsbruck and graduated with a master's degree in 1978. A short study visit at the University of Munich and military service followed. The dissertation was awarded the prize of the Austrian Geographical Society . Then followed English studies at the University of Salzburg (1991–1993) and from 2005 a second doctoral degree in theology (church history) with the dissertation “Bohemian Forest-Grenzlandpfarre Deutsch Reichenau near Friedberg. From the beginnings during the clearing colonization to the extinction in the 20th century ”, with which he obtained his doctorate in theology (church history) at the University of Salzburg in 2010.

From 1978 to 2013 he taught at the Rohrbach Commercial Academy, where he was appointed professor in 1989. From 2016 he will be a lecturer at the University of Education in Linz . In 2018 he supplemented this with lectures at the Philosophical-Theological University of Heiligenkreuz .

His research focuses on the Austrian Mühlviertel , especially from an agri-geographical, agricultural-historical and natural-spatial point of view, as well as the Bohemian Forest and the Sudeten German themes. He gave numerous lectures on the topic of "Expelling the Bohemian Forests" and led many excursions to the Bohemian border area.
