St. Thomas in Hirschzell , a district of Kaufbeuren in Bavaria , is the Catholic parish church of the village of Hirschzell , which belongs to Kaufbeuren. The core of the nave is from the High Middle Ages ;

Construction and plant

Hirschzell is first mentioned in a document in 839, but nothing can be proven of a church building from this time. The core of the nave is from the Middle Ages. In the 15th century the nave was extended to the west and the tower and portico were added. The gallery in the interior was drawn in in the 18th century, and the sacristy was replaced by a new building around 1900 . The flat-roofed nave has two ogival windows.

The sign is equipped with a net vault and its construction is reminiscent of the parish church of St. Martin in Kaufbeuren. The vault is painted with floral motifs, on the wall is a picture of the flagellation of Christ.

Furnishing

The church interior was furnished in a neo-Gothic style in the middle of the 19th century, the nave has a coffered ceiling, and the choir has a reticulated vault. The likewise neo-Gothic high altar dates from 1858 and has a clever device from which an altarpiece of St. Thomas can be pulled up. The picture from the time the altar was built comes from the Obergünzburg painter Johannes Kaspar and shows the apostle Thomas who, in disbelief, puts his hand into the wound of Christ.

In the altar there is a crescent moon as an altar figure, flanked on the left by a mourning Mary, on the right by John the Baptist. The altar figures as well as the inconspicuous crucifix above are probably from the early 16th century. The statues of the evangelists John and Luke on the left and right of the choir arch also date from this period. The color of the two figures comes from the 19th century, the artist is unknown.

On the side of the nave hangs a crucifix from the early 17th century, the flanking statues of Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian probably date from around 1700.

To the side of the entrance there are memorial plaques, one with a coat of arms relief for Dorothea Rehlinger († 1540) and one for Barbara Schweickart († 1527), both made of Solnhof Jura marble. In the floor in front of the choir is a red marble slab with the Schweickart coat of arms and a relief of Dorothea Rehlinger's coat of arms. The reliefs go back to a monastery that existed around this time on the south-eastern edge of the village on the site of an earlier castle, whose provost Dorothea Rehlinger was. A Mount of Olives Christ on the side of the sign dates to around 1480 and, together with a small figure of St. John on the left choir wall, is one of the oldest pieces of equipment in the church. The color of both pieces is more recent.

On the walls of the choir there are half-reliefs of the church teachers, which probably go back to the equipment of the earlier neo-Gothic pulpit. The current pulpit dates from 1938. In 1949 a terracotta way of the cross by Karl Baur from Munich came into the church.

The design of the folk altar with a glass plate on a metal grid construction on wooden feet comes from the Kaufbeur architect Michael Graf, the implementation took place in 1996 by local craftsmen. The carved choir stalls from around 1700 were replaced by very simply designed benches in 2000.

As part of the Gothicization of the church, the interior plaster was renewed in the middle of the 19th century, a monument preservation area as part of the church renovation in 1985 resulted in no remains of wall paintings. Paintings on the underside of the attic boards suggest that the nave had a large painted wooden ceiling before the neo-Gothic redesign.

organ

The organ on the gallery was renewed in 1963 from the Ebenhofen-based organ building company Schmid .
