St. Vincent (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Vincent is a red wine variety discovered in 1973 . It is probably a spontaneous cross between Pinot Noir and the Chambourcin grape variety. Scott Toedesbusch, who ran a vineyard owned by Lucian Dressel, discovered the vine in Augusta, Missouri. In the immediate vicinity of the site, only the vines of the presumed parents grew. Toedesbusch sent some seedlings to the well-known dealer Philip Wagner, who did a lot for the commercial distribution of the variety. In 2006 the grape variety was included in the American variety register. The variety is named after the patron saint of French winemakers, Vincent of Valencia .

The grape variety is used as a wine grape where it benefits from the comparatively high proportion of acid . The light red wines are reminiscent of a young Chianti wine and are quite fruity. The proportion of tannins in red wine is comparatively low. Due to the pronounced acidity, which can be problematic in bad vineyards, the grape is also suitable for the production of sparkling wine . Smaller stocks are in Indiana (→ Viticulture in Indiana ), Ohio (→ Viticulture in Ohio ), West Virginia (→ Viticulture in West Virginia ), Iowa (→ Viticulture in Iowa ), Missouri (→ Viticulture in Missouri ) and North Carolina (→ Viticulture in North Carolina ) and is included in the wines of the appellations of origin Augusta AVA , Ozark Mountain AVA , Ozark Highlands AVA and Hermann AVA .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The cone-shaped grape is medium-sized (the weight of the approx. 15 cm long grape averages 200 g) and has loose berries. The berries are large and bluish-black in color.

The grape variety ripens about 2 weeks after the Gutedel and is therefore medium-late ripening within the red grape varieties, so that it can no longer ripen in cool locations. The variety has a moderate resistance to powdery mildew and downy mildew . The same applies to the infestation of black rot on the vine and gray mold rot . The variety has a moderate winter hardiness.
