St John the Baptist's Church is a now partially in ruins, redundant church building of the Anglican Church in the hamlet of Mongewell in Oxfordshire , England .

The ruins stand on the east bank of the Thames , in the neighborhood of the former Carmel College , north of Mongewell Park , four kilometers south of Wallingford and close to the Ridgeway , an old road and today's long-distance footpath .

The building was put on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest by English Heritage on February 9, 1959 as Grade II ; it is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust .

history

The church was probably built in the 12th century and the late 18th century in a picturesque - Gothic Revival style for Shute Barrington rebuilt. Barrington was Bishop of Durham and was buried in the family vault in the church when he died in 1826 . The church was renovated in 1880 by L. Wyatt. On July 1, 1981, the church building was declared redundant and on July 31, 1985, the Churches Conservation Trust was assigned.

architecture

The floor plan of the church consists of the nave and the chancel , with a church tower at the western end. The structure is made of flint , other stones were used for decorative purposes. The walls of the nave are of buttresses of brick supports. The tower is made of brick and the roof of the sanctuary is covered with tiles . The roof is missing over the nave. The lower part of the tower is round, the upper part is hexagonal with a tinned parapet . The chancel is constructed in the Norman style and contains two funerary monuments from the 18th century. In one of them there is a gisant of a man in an oriental robe, including a turban .
