St Margaret's Church

The St Margaret's Church is a Roman Catholic church building in the Scottish town of Huntly in the Council area Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

St Margaret's Church was built in 1834. The necessary financial resources were largely provided by John Gordon of Wardhouse . Gordon may also have provided images of church buildings in Jerez, Spain , on which the Margaret Church should be stylistically oriented. His foundation is secured by seven contemporary Spanish paintings. It is assumed that Gordon himself, possibly in the lead, was jointly responsible for the design of the building. Due to architectural details, at least one contribution from William Robertson is assumed.

The bell made by Mears is from the year the church was built. The original neo-Greek altar is preserved in the sacristy. The current altar was installed around 1902.

description

The church building is at the intersection of Chapel Street and Park Street to the north of Huntly. On the main façade, which is exposed to the east , the three - tier neo-baroque bell tower with a square floor plan rises above the stylized portico with four pilasters . The church body, made of quarry stone, has an octagonal floor plan. The final tent roof is worked inside as a dome.
