San Sebastián del Oeste is a place with approx. 750 inhabitants and the capital of a municipality (municipio) with a total of approx. 5,000 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Jalisco . In 2011 the entire place was classified as Pueblo Mágico .

Location and climate

San Sebastián del Oeste is located at an altitude of approx. 1480  m in the wooded mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental approx. 275 km (driving distance) west of Guadalajara and approx. 800 km northwest of Mexico City ; the Pacific seaside resort of Puerto Vallarta is only 68 km to the west. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 1320 mm / year) falls predominantly in the summer half-year.

The vast majority of the population is of Indian descent; Mestizos are also numerous .

economy

For centuries, people lived the remote location as self from the proceeds of their small fields and gardens and some livestock. In addition, ore mining also played a certain role. Coffee and avocados are now grown in the area around the village . Day tourists from Puerto Vallarta have also been visiting the place since the last decades of the 20th century.

history

After ore deposits were discovered in the 16th century, the place was officially founded in 1605. From 1608 the existence of a St. Sebastian consecrated church. At the end of the 18th century, today's road network was built.

Attractions

  • Many houses in the village are single-storey and still have a colonial flair.
  • Today's single-nave church was built in the 1870s over a previous building that had become too small.
  • Directly next to the church is the elongated town hall with its protective canopy.
  • The Hacienda Jalisco is located close to the entrance to the village and served less for agriculture than as a base for ore processing in the region.
