history

The construction on the site of a former Dominican monastery was initiated by Horace Forbes , who later became the 19th  Lord Forbes , and George Boyle , who later became the 6th  Earl of Glasgow , who had met during their studies. The first section of the design by the eminent English church architect William Butterfield was completed in 1850 and consecrated in the same year . It was the first post-Reformation building of a cathedral in Scotland. At this point only one axis of the nave was completed and construction activity continued until 1890. Between 1901 and 1911 the west side was added and the east side was then redesigned in the same style. Planned by John Loughborough Pearson before his death, his son Frank Loughborough Pearson directed the work. The Lady Chapel was also added between 1908 and 1911 .
