The St Paul's Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Milngavie in East Dunbartonshire . It is at the junction between Glasgow Road , on which the A81 runs through the city, and Baldernock Road in the city center. In 1978 St Paul's Church was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in Category C. The church is still in use as such today.

history

In 1787 an application for the construction of a church building was granted by the Council of Elders of the Relief Church in Glasgow . In Milngavie there was no church building up to that point and services were held outdoors. At first there were problems with the church construction and a shell construction that had been started was abandoned for legal reasons. The New Kilpatrick Relief Church was finally completed in 1799. After several internal church mergers and the steadily growing congregation, new church buildings had to be built at the end of the 19th century. First, the Cairns Church was completed in 1903 . On January 12, 1906, St Paul's Church was finally opened. With the reintegration of most of the United Free Church of Scotland into the Church of Scotland in 1929, the Parish Milngavie was divided into three Parishs. Although St Paul's Church was the largest building, it became the parish church of the smallest and least populous Parish. Over the decades, the building has been constantly renovated. The bell tower that originally existed no longer exists today.

description

A competition was held in the run-up to the construction of the church, which Leadbetter and Fairley won with their design. After completion, the building was considered the most beautiful church building in the region around Dumbarton . The structure consists of roughly hewn, red sandstone . The transept has unusually two gable surfaces on each side. The window design is based on the late Gothic architecture.
