The Polotsk State University (short: PSU; English Polotsk State University; Russian Полоцкий государственный университет; Belarusian Полацкi дзяржаýны ýнiверсiтэт) is a university in Belarus .

history

Higher education in Polotsk has a long tradition. In 1581 the Jesuits founded a college in Polotsk, which by the end of the 17th century developed into one of the most important educational institutions in this region. In 1812 the college was raised to the status of an academy by the Russian Tsar Alexander I. It existed from 1812 to 1820 and was the first higher education institution in what is now Belarusian territory.

On July 14, 1968 , a branch of the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute was established in Novopolotsk , where the personnel for the oil processing plants in Novopolotsk were trained. On January 1, 1974 , it got an independent status as the Novopolotsk Polytechnic Institute. The Polotsk State University was established on September 14, 1993 .

In 2003 the buildings of the former Jesuit College were transferred to the Polotsk State University. After a two-year restoration period, the Faculty of Humanities and Computer Science moved there.

In 2016 , a third campus was opened in Mezhdureche near Polotsk. The Faculty of Sport and Education and the Faculty of Law are located there

The university today

500 teachers teach at the Polotsk State University, including 19 post-docs and 167 post-doctoral students.

The PSU publishes the “Gazette of the Polotsk State University”. This newspaper belongs to the "List of scientific publications in Belarus on the publication of research results".

One of the main focuses of the PSU is the cooperation with foreign universities. With the Technical University of Munich (Germany), the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences (Germany), the Royal Technical University of Växjö (Sweden) and the University of Växjö, as well as with the University of Genoa (Italy), the PSU has agreements on cooperation in the field of education, Science and culture.

These agreements enable the academic mobility of students and teachers from the universities mentioned.

Since 1996 the PSU has been participating in the “Tempus” project financed by the European Union, which enables university cooperation between EU and non-EU countries.

Since 2008 there has been a DAAD editing at the PSU. In recent years, a large number of employees and students have received a DAAD scholarship at one of the universities in Germany. At PSU there are regular projects and events of the DAAD and the Goethe-Institut Minsk, in which teachers and students actively participate.

At PSU there are a number of AGs and student clubs, such as the deserving student theater “ART” (Russian: “АРТ”), the dance group “Zhemchuzhina” (Russian: “:емчужина”), the dance group for modern dance “TORYDANCE ”, The solo singing studio“ Nastrojenie ”(Russian:“ Настроение ”), the student film and video club“ Konspekt ”(Russian:“ Конспект ”), the student newspaper“ Nastezh ”(Russian:“ Настежь ”), the club intellektueller Games «RUBON» (Russian: «Рубон») and a tourist office that offers tours and events for guests of the university.
