Building of the State Archives in Eupen

The State Archives in Eupen ( Belgium ) is one of the 19 departments of the Belgian State Archives .

The office has been located in the Rehrmann-Fey house on the edge of Werthplatz near the train station in Eupen , in the province of Liège , in the German-speaking community and has the address Kaperberg 2-4.

history

As part of Belgium's first major state reform in 1973, the desire was first expressed to set up an archive service for the German-speaking areas. It was not until 15 years later, in 1988, that the Minister of the Interior, Louis Tobback, responsible for archives, and the Minister-President of the German-speaking Community, Joseph Maraite , approved the establishment of an archive service in Eupen. The State Archives were in space heritage-protected provided and owned by the city of Eupen detached house Rehrmann-Fey at the foot of Mount capers available, which was built from 1724 to 1728.

In April 1989, the archives relating to the judicial district of Eupen were transferred from Liège. This was followed in November of the same year by an agreement on the management of the archive material deposited with the State Archives in Eupen. Finally, in 1996 the Eupen State Archives were run as a separate department of the Belgian State Archives and since 2013 it has been part of the operational management of the State Archives in the Walloon provinces.

The State Archives in Eupen has been managed by Els Herrebout since 2011 as the successor to long-time director Alfred Minke. The historian René Rohrkamp was at her side as deputy head of the department from 2012 to 2014 and the historian and archivist Peter M. Quadflieg has been performing this task since June 2017 .
