History of the archive

Title page of the first repertory of the Bad Neustadt City Archives by Alois Mitterwieser from 1910.

The earliest evidence of archival activity in Bad Neustadt can be found in a Reformation story from 1873. Around forty years later there is a directory that was made by the famous royal Bavarian archivist Alois Mitterwieser , who must have been active in the city in 1910 and who created a repertory on the holdings of the city archive. Local employees of the administration must have actively supported him. Further evidence in the city archive suggests that the archives were active in the past. Ludwig Benkert left an important local chronicle in 1985. Before that, Alfons Maria Borst had published a smaller book on the history of the city. In 2012 the local 150-year newspaper history was published as a joint publication project between the archive and the local Rhön and Saalepost .

In 2014, the “Judaica Bad Neustadt” website was created as a joint project between a working group led by Prof. Moshe Caine from the University of Jerusalem and the archive. The school group involved received the Snopkowski Prize in the same year for their commitment .
