The Chur City Archives are the archives of the Graubünden capital Chur . It has holdings of documents, files, photos and cards. The collection area is documents on the history of Chur and the files of the city administration of Chur. The city archive is located in the historic town hall in Chur's old town.

The city archive of Chur is responsible for the security, indexing, storage and evaluation of the city archive material. It looks after documents of public or urban historical significance from associations, companies and private individuals. In addition, the Chur City Archive promotes knowledge of its holdings and their evaluation through its own scientific work and the organization of exhibitions.

Services

The Chur City Archives are open Monday to Friday. In addition to archival materials from the 10th to the 21st century, a public reference library is available to users. There are works on the history of Chur and Graubünden as well as magazines. a. the official gazettes of the city of Chur since 1846.

Archives holdings

The holdings are divided into the historical archive, the administrative archive and bequests / deposits as well as the collections of printed matter, plans, photos, engravings and graphics.
The main holdings of the historical archive date from the time the city was dissolved by the bishop in the 15th century until the canton of Graubünden was founded in 1803. It includes documents, council, criminal and guild files as well as bound manuscripts on finance and the judiciary as well as other topics . The oldest document dates from 952. The administrative archive contains the modern administrative documents from the 19th to the 21st century (contracts, administrative files and volumes).
The official and unofficial publications from the 18th to the 21st century are kept in the publication collection. These are laws, ordinances, instructions, voting messages, reports from municipal associations, pamphlets, etc. The plan collection contains city, corridor, street and clock plans as well as building plans since the 18th century. The collections of photos, engravings and graphics mainly contain images of Chur.

Window displays and window displays

As an important center of Graubünden for centuries, Chur has a rich architectural heritage. The city archives put together a tour of the most important sights. It consists of five sections: around Reichsgasse, Kirchgasse, Bischöflichen Hof , Obere Gasse and Kornplatz . Since November 2011, the buildings have been presented with historical and current photos and explanatory texts in the shop windows of the city archive in Reichgasse.
At the entrance to the city archive on Poststrasse, the exhibition "Chur lit" - poetry and reality of a legend in 1821 can be seen in a showcase. The legendary figure of the shoemaker Rimmel (an alleged arsonist) is juxtaposed with the real person (a multiple murderer).

Valèr was born on March 4, 1861 in Davos . In 1881 he graduated from the teachers' seminar in Chur. He later studied history and languages ​​in Zurich. From 1920 to 1928 he was Chur city archivist. He has published publications on the city of Chur, Graubünden politics and statehood in the early modern period. He died in Scuol on August 20, 1929 .
  • 1893 to 1919: Fritz Jecklin
Jecklin was born on July 9, 1863 in Chur. He studied history at the University of Zurich . From 1891 to 1927 he was the curator of the Rätisches Museum in Chur. From 1893 to 1919 he also served as Chur city archivist Fritz Jecklin was the first city archivist to keep the municipal archive according to modern principles. From 1919 to 1927 he was the state archivist of the Canton of Graubünden. Fritz Jecklin wrote publications, a. a. to the three frets . He died in Chur on July 30, 1927.
