The Iserlohn City Archive is the municipal archive of the city of Iserlohn and, as a cultural institute, belongs to the Iserlohn city administration. It archives documents from the city administration as well as from private sources. The use of the archive material is possible for everyone in accordance with the usage regulations.

history

Until the 1910s, the city archive was only run on a part-time basis, for example by the city secretary. Julius Baedecker (1855–1920) and Pastor Reinhard Groscurth (1838–1923) were commissioned in 1900 to organize the archive. In the course of this, the archive material was housed together with the administration library in a separate room in the town hall. In 1901 a detailed report on the order that had taken place could be submitted. In the following years, the archive was apparently no longer looked after.

In 1918, while working on a publication on Iserlohn's history , Wilhelm Schulte found the archives scattered throughout the city administration.

Perhaps Schulte's research activities and the resulting interest in the city's history were the catalyst for the city council's decision in 1920 that the archive should be placed under expert management. The deputy principal and writer Ludwig Schröder , who was also the head of the public library, was able to be won over to organize and list the archives. With him the continuous maintenance of the city archives began. Schröder also endeavored to better house the archive holdings. From 1927, rooms in the old armory could be used.

In 1937 the local history museum was set up in the same building under the direction of Gustav Pfingsten . Since then, the city archive, local history museum and public library have been managed together in the so-called “House of Home”.

Due to the gradual increase in the archive holdings, new housing became necessary in the mid-1970s. From 1977 the new premises in the Rampelmann house could then be used.

In the same year, Götz Bettge, a professionally trained archivist, was hired for the first time. Two years later, the city archives and the museum were organizationally separated. In the 1990s, space became scarce again, so external magazines had to be used.

In 2004 we were able to move into the rooms currently used in the Alte Post. With this move, all inadequacies of the previous accommodation could be eliminated, so that a building that is adapted to the archiving needs is now available.

Archives parish

The archive district includes the city of Iserlohn in its current form. This also includes the municipalities of Hennen , Sümmern and Kesbern , which were independent until 1974 , as well as the former town of Letmathe .

Stocks

Many documents were lost due to a large number of city fires up until the 18th century. In 1653 the town hall, in which the files and documents were kept, burned. Therefore, only a few documents from this period can be found in the city archive.

After a viewing of the archive in 1907 by the director of the Dortmund City Archive , Karl Rübel , the historical documents were brought to Dortmund , as the archive there was constantly manned and so it was possible to store and use it properly. These documents were relocated to Dortmund during the Second World War due to the risk of air raids. A large part was destroyed by looting at the relocation site. The remaining documents were returned to Iserlohn in 1949.

After the communal territorial reform in 1975, the city archive of the formerly independent city of Letmathe was integrated, which until then was headed by Walter Ewig .

In addition to the municipal archive material, archive material from other sources is of great importance in the city archive. The existence of the Letmathe house , a former aristocratic residence, for example, begins as early as the 14th century.

The estate of the Nohl family from Iserlohn also includes a partial estate of the musicologist Ludwig Nohl . This contains the oldest surviving copy of Ludwig van Beethoven's diary 1812-1818. Beethoven's original is no longer available, which is why the copy was used for the edition of the diaries.

The metal goods production, which was formerly located in Iserlohn on a large scale, is also represented by company estates. Examples are the companies Brause & Co and Kissing & Möllmann .

Numerous club and party bequests are also entrusted to the city archive. In addition, the newspapers that have been important for the city of Iserlohn since 1842 can be viewed, for example the Iserlohner Kreisanzeiger und Zeitung .

Library

Archive users have access to an extensive library with a focus on local, regional and national and German history as well as publications on archive-related topics.

public relation

The city archive has been offering a series of lectures on urban history topics since 2012. The results of the archive work are also presented in exhibitions and guided tours. In addition, publications and reprints of old city maps and postcards from the holdings are offered. In addition, various series on the city's history are published.
