The Protestant town church (also: St. Marien ) is a baroque hall church in Werdau in the Saxon district of Zwickau . It belongs to the Werdau parish in the Zwickau parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saxony .

History and architecture

Today's church replaced a church originally built as a castle chapel, which was first mentioned in 1363 and largely destroyed in the town fire in 1756. It was rebuilt between 1760 and 1764 according to plans by Samuel Locke . In 1762 the tower of a previous building to the north collapsed and was replaced by a new building on the west side. In the years 1863 to 1869 the tower was renewed again, further renovations to the structure took place in 1887 and 1903, the latter by Theodor Quentin . Interior restorations were carried out in 1937 and 1976 to 1980, an exterior restoration from 1994 to 1996.

The structure is an externally simple plastered building with a three-sided east end, which is structured by buttresses. On the north and south sides there are risalits for staircases, the curved eastern staircase is neo-baroque. The west tower is built on a square floor plan, characterized by neo-renaissance forms and is closed by an octagonal bell storey with a curved dome and lantern. The west portal with a triangular pediment and a Gothic-style tympanum with a Maiestas Domini representation and evangelists in 1888 by Leo Müsch created. The building is illuminated by arched windows.

The interior is designed in strict late baroque forms. The hollow vault , supported by twelve square pillars and originally painted with Rococo ornaments, closes off the elongated hall with surrounding galleries. Angel head capitals with rocailles decorations by Andreas Vogel from 1764 are attached to the pillars . The gallery parapets with fields were formerly painted with tape, in the east there are glazed boxes. In the eastern staircase there is a large stucco coat of arms from Electoral Saxony, which probably comes from the parapet of the organ gallery.

Furnishing

The altar has the shape of a large columned aedicula over a slightly convex floor plan, in the blown gable are kneeling angels with the symbol of the Trinity in a ray halo. The altar painting with a Noli-me-tangere depiction by Christian Ferdinand Hartmann dates from 1812. The pulpit with a curved sound cover shows rococo cartridges on the bulbous basket. The wooden baptismal font in Art Nouveau forms was created in 1902. Three portraits of pastors date from the last quarter of the 18th century.

The organ is a work by Jehmlich Orgelbau from 1984/1985 in the three-tower, early classicist case of an organ by Johann Gottlob Trampeli from 1800/1801. In 2012 three new chilled iron bells were cast and hung in the renewed bell cage together with a preserved bronze bell.
