The Stadtmuseum Aichach is a city and regional history museum of the district town of Aichach in the district of Aichach-Friedberg in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia . In 1906 the city's historical collection was founded, which formed the basis for the local history museum that opened in Aichach Hospital in 1909 . After several moves, the historical collection has been in the former Aichach hospital since 1973 and shares the building with the Aichach city archive and the day care center. After it had been closed since 1997 for expansion and renovation work under the direction of the Werner Plöckl architectural office, the museum was reopened on October 17, 2008 with a new concept. The permanent exhibition is located on the upper floor and in the attic. On the ground floor there are function rooms and space for various special exhibitions.

Thematic areas of the museum and exhibition

The central theme of the exhibition in the Aichach City Museum is the history of the city of Aichach and the surrounding area in the period from the 12th century to the regional reform in 1972. The permanent exhibition is housed on the upper and top floors and extends over around 1,000 m² with different collection focuses.

Sacred art and religious life

The department is partly located in the rooms of the former hospital chapel. You can see sculptures, paintings and folklore objects from the region. The highlights of the department are an Aichach civic crib from the mid-19th century as well as the altar of the St. Helena Chapel from around 1770 and the Aichach lions, probably a fragment of a baptismal font from the 13th century.

State and city history in the Middle Ages and the early modern period

This area includes the urban development in the late Middle Ages with special consideration of the connection with the House of Wittelsbach . The importance of Aichach as a central location in north-western Upper Bavaria is emphasized.

Rural and middle-class living environment

The subject of this section is the life of farmers, agriculture, guilds and handicrafts. In addition, farm furniture , costumes and guild objects are shown. In the attic of the museum you can find information about social life and the work of the farmers with the corresponding agricultural equipment. A special highlight is the upper-class salon from the villa of the Aichach Reichstag deputy and councilor Franz Beck .

Period of the Napoleonic Wars

The focus is on everyday war life, the hardship and misery of the civilian population. A unique contemporary document is the almost 15-meter-long collage of more than 2000 billets from the period from 1796 to 1816, glued together by the Aichach innkeeper Lorenz Alois Gerhauser, which is also used in the museum's concept as a timeline for the events.

State and city history in the 19th and 20th centuries

The development of industry and trade is particularly emphasized here. In addition, one area is dedicated to the Aichach women's prison and its history.

The museum takes part in the annual Aichach Museum Night campaign, during which all Aichach museums are open every second Saturday evening in October. In addition, guided tours on selected topics take place on the first Sunday of each month.
