history

On April 28, 1841, the "Sparkasse in Remscheid" began its business. In the beginning the business hours were held in the town hall, later she rented her own business premises.

The increased business volume made it necessary to relocate the savings bank premises from today's Daniel-Schürmann-Straße to Brüderstraße in 1885 and to Schützenstraße in 1896. After the completion of the new town hall building in 1906, the Sparkasse moved into the rooms specially prepared for them with fire-proof and theft-proof safes.

After the First World War, the ticket offices in the town hall were no longer able to cope with the demands of the increased business volume. In 1919 two private houses adjoining the town hall were acquired for the Sparkasse and converted. On November 1, 1922, the first branch was opened in the Handweiser district. Further branches were set up in 1926 in the Hasten district and the neighboring municipality of Burg ad Wupper .

At the same time as in Remscheid, a savings bank was founded in neighboring Lennep . On September 1, 1841, the Sparkasse Lennep started its business. In Lüttringhausen it was decided in 1862 to set up a savings bank. In the course of the municipal reorganization on August 1, 1929, the previously independent municipal savings banks in Remscheid, Lennep and Lüttringhausen were merged to form the “Städtische Sparkasse zu Remscheid”.

With the growing business volume, a new building for the Sparkasse became necessary. After almost two years of construction, the Sparkasse inaugurated the new office building at the main office opposite the town hall in March 1938.

During the air raid in 1943, the headquarters burned out. The employees in the basement kept the business going until the cash desk and ancillary rooms were poorly furnished again.

The change in the Savings Bank Act in 1958 required a new version of the Sparkasse's statutes and the simultaneous change of the name to “Stadtsparkasse Remscheid”. In 1966 the company moved to today's main office building on Alleestraße.

In the following years, additional branches were set up in order to cope with the forecast increase in the number of residents. A total of 10 new locations were established between 1958 and 1985.

In 1991 the Stadtsparkasse Remscheid celebrated its 150th anniversary. On this occasion, she founded a non-profit foundation, which today operates under the name “Stiftung der Stadtsparkasse Remscheid”.

In parallel to technical progress, the branches were continuously equipped with modern self-service devices, such as B. statement printers and ATMs equipped.

Since the mid-1990s, online banking has offered savings bank customers the option of doing their financial transactions over the Internet.

In November 2003 the Stadtsparkasse Remscheid opened its competence center for real estate in the Alleestraße. Since then, a team of brokers and mortgage lenders has accompanied many customers in buying and selling, financing and modernizing their property. Over the years, the ImmobilienCenter of Stadtsparkasse Remscheid has become the market leader in real estate brokerage and construction financing.

On April 28, 2016 the Stadtsparkasse Remscheid celebrated under the motto “For you. For us. For Remscheid “its 175th anniversary.
