history

The city's technical works (water, gas and electricity works and public baths) were renamed “Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Gmünd” in 1939 and offer the following basic supplies.

Water supply

For centuries, the residents of Schwäbisch Gmünd got the water they needed mainly from dug wells and existing watercourses. Some wooden pipes carried spring water from outside the city wall into the city, including the public spring water pipes to the Lion and Mary Fountain, which had existed since at least the 16th century. In 1862 five local brewers had a private spring water pipe made of iron pipes from the linden ridge into the city. In addition, fire hydrants were installed. Due to the increasing water consumption of the city, a Mannheim hydraulic engineering technician developed the project of the seepage tunnel for groundwater in the meadows Unterm Buch outside the city. After completion of the project in 1897, the water supply in Schwäbisch Gmünd begins by the municipal waterworks Unterm Buch. The construction costs amounted to around 750,000 Reichsmarks. The demand for house connections was great.

The water supply of the state water supply established in 1912 to Schwäbisch Gmünd begins in 1926. The city was connected to the downpipe that leads from the top container in Osterbuch near Aalen to the end container in Rottenburg am Neckar near Stuttgart .

After the Second World War, Schwäbisch Gmünd took in thousands of displaced persons between 1945 and 1947 . The result was an immense increase in water demand. In addition, drought impaired water production. There was a shortage of supplies in households and businesses, in the city's hospital and schools. For this reason, the country's interior ministry urged an "immediate, thorough and generous expansion of the water supply system". Thereupon, in the spring of 1947, the municipal council decided to build a second connection pipe to the state water supply. In the late autumn of 1947, Schwäbisch Gmünd obliged all male residents between the ages of 16 and 60 to do community service in order to help with the construction of the new connection pipe to the state water supply. This second line should lead from the state water supply line on the district of Straßdorf to the Waldstetter bridge. It was put into operation in August 1948.

In April 1959 the Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Gmünd took over the water supply of the incorporated district of Bettringen. Between 1969 and 1976 the supply area of the municipal utilities continued to grow. During this period they also took over the water supply for the municipalities of Herlikofen, Bargau, Weiler, Degenfeld, Lindach, Großdeinbach, Straßdorf and Rechberg. In 2001 the Ostalbwasser West GmbH was founded. Stadtwerke took over services in the area of water and gas supply as well as wastewater disposal for surrounding communities and special purpose associations. Today, the employees of the municipal utility service a pipe network around 300 kilometers long.

Gas supply

The first gas works in Schwäbisch Gmünd was in the Ott'scher factory in 1855. The gas supply to the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd began in 1861. In order to manage the whole thing, Gmünder Aktiengesellschaft Gaslighting was founded in 1862. This came to the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd in 1893. In 1964 the town gas supply was stopped and the long-distance gas supply started. In 1969, the gas supply in southern Germany, based in Stuttgart, supplied the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd with gas. The first gas transfer station was built in the Hardt area. In 1976 the spherical gas tank (geometric volume 12,500 m³, usable volume 100,000 m³ natural gas) was put into operation. A second gas transfer station was built in the Gügling area in 1986. In 1990 the districts of Herlikofen and Hussenhofen were connected to the natural gas network. The surrounding communities will then also be included in the coverage area. Between 1991 and 1998, the districts of Wustenriet, Waldstetten, Straßdorf, Bargau and Mutlangen got a gas connection. In 2002, the Lindach district followed, as well as the densification of the gas network.

Power supply

Mutlanger Heide solar park

At the end of the 19th century, advice was given in Schwäbisch Gmünd on the construction of an electricity plant . The aim was to catch up with the Pforzheim competition in terms of jewelry production. In 1898 there were 159 jewelry factories in Pforzheim that were connected to the energy supply. Thus, the construction of a power station would have technical and economic reasons for Schwäbisch Gmünd. The driving force was the entirety of the jewelry manufacturers. The fact that the population also benefited was used as an argument to win over those who were hesitant. By means of a survey among manufacturers and residents, the need for electricity was clarified, the result was satisfactory. In the summer of 1900, the Gmünder local council decided to build an electric power plant, which was put into operation in December 1901. Gas engines had to operate the e-werk because the Rems was not sufficient to drive the turbine. Maschinenfabrik Esslingen built the power station and took over the 15-year lease.

In addition to hydropower plants at the Buchauffahrt and Lauchhof locations, caloric power plants are also used in block-type thermal power stations with combined heat and power (CHP). In addition, the municipal utility operates the Mutlangen solar park on the Mutlanger Heide . After a four-month construction period, the solar park went online in January 2013. On the area of the former barracks of the 56th Field Artillery Brigade , 23,628 photovoltaic modules were installed on around 14 hectares. The plant with almost 6.8  MWp can generate 6.85 GWh of electrical energy per year, which corresponds to an average output of 0.8  MW .
