Stanley Anthony "Stan" Coveleski (born July 13, 1889 in Shamokin , Pennsylvania , † March 20, 1984 in South Bend , Indiana ), born Stanislaus Kowalewski , was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball . His nickname was Covey .
biography
Stan Coveleski was of Polish descent; he grew up in the mining areas of Pennsylvania. His older brother was the " Giant Killer " Harry Coveleski . His first stop in the Major League was the Philadelphia Athletics in 1912. There he managed a shutout in his first start as a pitcher , but only four more starts followed that season. Until 1916 he spent his career in the minor leagues , where he refined his spitball . Coveleski was one of the 17 throwers in the majors who were allowed to continue using the spitball after this throw was banned in 1920 .
He won over 20 games during the season five times in his career. In the 1920 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers , he won three complete games and allowed only 2 runs in the success of the Cleveland Indians . He was also able to win the World Series with the Washington Senators in 1925.
Another notable game took place on May 24, 1918. Coveleski threw in a game over 19 innings the entire season in the 3-2 win over the New York Yankees .
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. On June 10, 1976, he also became a member of the National Polish-American Hall of Fame .
