The Standard Bank Center (also known as the Hanging Building or 78 Fox Street ) is a high-rise building (sometimes referred to as a " skyscraper ") in Johannesburg , South Africa . It is located on the corner of 5 Simmonds Street and 78 Fox Street in the city's central business district. It was built in 1966–1968 as the first skyscraper in Johannesburg and is 139 m high. Until 1990 it was the seat of the Standard Bank .

The building was erected in a suspended construction, starting from the upper floors, after the load-bearing core had first been built. As civil engineers, Ove Arup & Partner were responsible for the project.

The challenge for the architects Hubert Petschnigg (1913–1997) and Helmut Hentrich (1905–2001) ( HPP Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner ), who planned the high-rise together with the British-Danish engineer and structural engineer Ove Arup (1895–1988), was in the then limited building space in the cramped city of Johannesburg in the 1960s. In order to be able to erect the tall building on the small construction site, the planners decided on the spectacular suspended construction.

First, the reinforced concrete core with the staircase, lifts and the building services systems was built. Concrete and steel girders were mounted as cantilever arms on three levels , which can still be seen on the facade. A quarter of each floor slab was concreted on site with the help of plastic formwork, which gave the shell concrete slabs a characteristic appearance, and was lifted by a special lift. The individual floors were completed from above from the three load-bearing levels. Steel supporting beams with a height of 1.5 m and a length of 24.6 m on the outside serve as balustrades for the facade. The concrete had to be delivered during the night as the traffic did not allow it to do otherwise. The appearance of the building is characterized by the use of concrete, steel and glass.

The skyscraper has five basement and 34 upper floors; the computer and elevator control center are now on the two lowest floors. Two technical floors divide the building vertically into three parts. The windows were made with colored and mirrored laminated glass as sun protection. The 60 cm wide balustrades of the facade are suitable for cleaning the windows , so that no window cleaning lift is necessary. The air conditioning systems are located in the corners of the facade. The suspended construction results in 9.7 m wide, column-free office space.
