The Standard Bank is a banking group and credit institution in southern Africa with branches and a. in South Africa , Namibia , Botswana , Mozambique , Zambia and Zimbabwe .
The bank was established in 1862 under the name Standard Bank of British South Africa and was renamed Standard Bank of South Africa as early as 1883 . The bank was active in both southern Africa and the UK. In 1915 the first branch of today's Standard Bank Namibia was opened in Lüderitz . In 1962 the activities in Africa and Europe were separated. The African division continued to operate under the name Standard Bank of South Africa , while the European division became Standard Bank Ltd. which merged with Chartered Bank in 1969 to form Standard Chartered Bank , which is still active today . In the same year was in South Africa Holding Standard Bank Investment Corporation (: short Stanbic ) was established, which took over gradually the shares in Standard Bank. In 1987 this process was over.
Due to the political situation in South Africa , the African business area was initially only active in South Africa and South West Africa (today Namibia ) in isolation and very slowly expanded its business area to the other countries in southern Africa. After the end of apartheid , the institute expanded rapidly.
The bank provides financial services to private and corporate clients and has a network of over 746 branches in South Africa and 240 in other parts of Africa.
