Stanisław Brzozowski (philosopher)
Stanisław Brzozowski (born June 28, 1878 in Maziarnia near Chełm , Russian Empire , † April 30, 1911 in Florence ) was a Polish philosopher.
Brzozowski developed his philosophy largely under the influence of the philosophers Immanuel Kant and Johann Gottlieb Fichte , later Karl Marx , Friedrich Nietzsche , Henri Bergson and William James . His engagement with historical materialism brought him close to Georges Sorel and Antonio Labriola . A main concept of his philosophy, based on Marx, was work .
Brzozowski died of tuberculosis , which he contracted as a result of prolonged imprisonment in a tsarist prison for activities in the Polish independence movement. In 1908 the Russian writer Vladimir Burzew publicly suspected him of being involved in the tsarist Okhrana . The allegations were repeated in numerous labor movement publications. The Polish writers Karol Irzykowski , Ostap Ortwin and Wacław Nałkowski defended Brzozowski and wrote a memorandum. Also Stanisław Przybyszewski solidarity with Brzozowski. The allegations remained unsolved, but accelerated Brozowski's health collapse.
Brzozowski's work influenced numerous Polish intellectuals such as Andrzej Trzebiński , Czesław Miłosz and Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz .
