Hans Gutzwiller

Hans Gutzwiller (born March 5, 1913 in Arlesheim , † July 6, 1988 in Basel ; resident in Therwil ) was a Swiss classical philologist and high school rector.

Life

Hans Gutzwiller is the son of the secondary school teacher Otto Gutzwiller and Marie Dettwiler. He graduated from the Matura at the Gymnasium am Münsterplatz in Basel and studied classical philology and German literature at the universities of Basel , Heidelberg and Pisa . In 1939 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate and obtained the teaching diploma for middle and high schools.

During the Second World War Gutzwiller did vicariate and active service as a commandant . In 1945 he married Annemarie Kätterer from Elgg ( Canton Zurich ). He developed the Latin teaching material Gymnasium Latinum with Walter Cabinet . From 1946 to 1973 he was rector of the humanistic grammar school.

Gutzwiller was a supporter of the reunification of the half-cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft , which is why he served on the Constitutional Council of both Basel from 1960 to 1968 . From 1976 to 1982 he was President of the Board of Trustees of the University of Basel.

His son Felix Gutzwiller , who graduated from the Humanist High School, is a member of the FDP Council of States in Zurich and the former President of the FDP parliamentary group in the Federal Assembly.
