The Stanislaus Kostka Cathedral of Łódź is the Roman Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Lodz . The neo-Gothic church from 1912 is dedicated to St. Stanislaus Kostka and also has the title of a minor basilica .

history

With the industrialization of the textile industry in particular, Łódz, then administered by Russian authorities, grew to more than 200,000 inhabitants at the end of the 19th century, around half of whom were Catholics. The Church of the Holy Cross was completed in 1888 and the Assumption of Mary in 1897. In addition to the relocated Joseph's Church, it was decided to build a fourth church. To this end, an open, international architecture competition was announced in 1898. Then the design of the Łódz company Wende und Zarske with the participation of the German architect Emil Zillmann was approved in 1900 in the Ministry of the Interior in St. Petersburg. The foundation stone was laid by the Archbishop of Warsaw, Wincenty Teofil Popiel , on June 16, 1901. With the reinforced concrete vault above the church, construction was completed in 1911 and the altars were consecrated in 1912. After the independence of Poland in 1919 Pope Benedict XV. the diocese of Lodz was created and the Church of St. Stanisława Kostka was elevated to the status of a cathedral. The church was completed with the completion of the tower with a height of 104 meters in 1927, which makes it the fourth highest church in Poland today .

In 1941, during World War II , the occupation authorities began persecuting the Roman Catholic Church. The cathedral was closed, looted and turned into a military depot. The stained glass was destroyed, the largest bell in the cathedral was looted. After the liberation from the German occupation, the cathedral was extensively renovated. A fire completely consumed the roof of the cathedral in 1971. Falling plaster and high temperature caused damage to the vaults and the equipment such as the organ, which was replaced on September 3, 1978 by a new building by the Eisenbarth company from Passau at the end of the church renovation .

On June 13, 1987, John Paul II visited the cathedral, and in 1989 he gave it the title of minor basilica .
