Stanley Mandelstam

Stanley Mandelstam (born December 12, 1928 in Johannesburg , South Africa , † June 23, 2016 ) was a South African-born American theoretical physicist .

life and work

Stanley Mandelstram was born in Johannesburg on December 12, 1928, the son of a teacher and a trader who had emigrated from Latvia . He grew up in Glencoe and attended high school in Dundee .

Mandelstam studied in Witwatersrand until 1952 and at Trinity College at Cambridge University until 1954 (Bachelor degree). In 1956 he received his doctorate from the University of Birmingham . 1960–1963 he was Professor of Mathematical Physics in Birmingham and then went to Berkeley , where he was retired in 1994. In between he was visiting professor at the University of Paris-Süd in 1979/1980 and 1984/1985 .

Mandelstam is known for his work on dispersion relations in elementary particle physics (Mandelstam representation of the scattering amplitudes through double dispersion relations, 1958). Since the 1970s he has been concerned with string theory and investigates a.o. a. the n -loop string amplitudes and the path integral description of strings. Another field of his work from the 1970s onwards were possible confinement mechanisms in Yang Mills theories . As early as the 1960s, he developed a new quantization method for Yang-Mills and gravitational theories.

He was a Fellow of the Royal Society since 1962 and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1992 . In 1991 he received the Dirac Medal (ICTP) and in 1992 the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics . The Mandelstam variables were also named after him.
