The Star Wars Day (translated: Star Wars tag ) is an unofficial holiday that since 2011 every year on May 4th is celebrated. On this day, the Star Wars films by George Lucas are celebrated.

May 4th was chosen on the basis of the English pronunciation of the date " May, the fourth ", as it corresponds to the pronunciation of the sentence " May the force be with you" (in German: " May the force be with you"), the frequent appears in the Star Wars films is very similar. The meaning of this phrase can be equated with “good luck” or “God be with you”. Although the holiday was not created or explained by Lucasfilm , many Star Wars fans around the world chose to celebrate the day. The astrophysicist and author Jeanne Cavelos used the saying on page 94 of her 1999 book The Science of Star Wars .

In 2008 the first Facebook group was created to celebrate Luke Skywalker Day with the same catchphrase. While the first group never found widespread recognition, the phenomenon spread to college campuses a few years later and Star Wars Day was formed.

The first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in 2011 in Toronto , Ontario ( Canada ) held in Toronto Underground Cinema. The festivities hosted by Sean Ward and Alice Quinn included an Original Trilogy Trivia Game Show, a costume contest with famous judges, and the internet's best tribute films, mashups , parodies and remixes on the big screen. The second annual edition took place on Friday May 4, 2012.

Fans (even government officials) have celebrated Star Wars in a variety of ways on social media and television.

Since 2013, the Walt Disney Company has celebrated the holiday with several Star Wars events and celebrations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World . Disney acquired Lucasfilm, including the rights to Star Wars , in late 2012.

Minor league baseball teams like the Toledo Mud Hens and Durham Bulls wore special uniforms on Star Wars Day to promote the day.

On Star Wars Day 2015, the astronauts of the International Space Station watched Star Wars .

Nowadays, Star Wars Day is celebrated all over the world. Many fans dress up and spend the day doing a Star Wars film marathon. Many cinemas also show Star Wars films in their programs on this day . Companies nowadays mainly use Star Wars Day to sell suitable merchandise . These include, for example, discount promotions on Star Wars T-shirts, Lego items, Star Wars gadgets, collectible figures and various other fan items. To express enthusiasm for Star Wars , fans, companies, and other sites share memes and comments.

On Star Wars Day 2020, Disney released Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , the finale of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series and a documentary series Disney Galerie: The Mandalorian on the Disney + streaming platform .

Revenge of the Fifth / Revenge of the Sixth

Alternative Star Wars Day on May 5th

Some recognize the following day, May 5th, as "Revenge of the Fifth " (in German: "The Revenge of the Fifth"), a play on words from the 3rd episode of the Star Wars films "Revenge of the Sith " (in German: "Revenge of the Sith"), and celebrate the Sith Lords and other villainous characters from the Star Wars series instead of the Jedi.

Others celebrate a day later, on May 6th, on the grounds that "Revenge of the Sixth " (in German: "The Revenge of the Sixth") is a better play on "Revenge of the Sith ".

May 20th

To celebrate the premiere of Das Imperium (English: Empire) Strikes Back in Great Britain, May 20th was proclaimed "Empire Day". Empire Day used to be celebrated in the British Empire . In the television series Star Wars: Rebels , "Empire Day" was confirmed for the Galactic Empire .

25. May

The Los Angeles City Council has 25 May 2007, dedicated the 30th anniversary of Star Wars to Star Wars Day explained. May 25, 1977 was the day on which the first Star Wars film had its cinema premiere in the USA .

Geek Pride Day is also celebrated on the same day. Both days have a connection through the film The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the resulting Towel Day .

The author of the Discworld novels will also be celebrated on May 25th .
