Jedi

The emblem of the Jedi Order
A lightsaber (also called a lightsaber) is a Jedi's weapon.

The Jedi and their ore antagonists , the Sith are groups of fictitious figures of of George Lucas embossed Star Wars - Universe . Its main features are the control of a fictitious force of power (in the original Force ), which gives them superhuman abilities, and the use of " lightsaber " mentioned slashing and stabbing weapons .

term

The term Jedi probably goes back to the Japanese Jidai-geki . Other sources assume a Jewish meaning, a derivation from Yehudi (sl.) Or יְהוּדִים, Yehudim (pl.) Transliterates Jehudim. Another possible origin is the term Siddhi - a term for special supernatural powers and abilities that, according to tradition in Hinduism and Buddhism, one attains through spiritual practice.

general information

The Jedi have abilities that they acquire through the Force. The films maintain the plot-defining conflict from the use and abuse of this power by the Jedi and their antagonists , the Sith . If a Jedi uses power in anger - also in the belief that this is done in the context of a good cause - there is a risk that he will switch to the dark side of power and succumb to evil.

The Jedi act according to a code that should help them to live in harmony with the Force and to act according to their will, not to abuse it and thus not to get on the path of the dark side of the Force . The code stipulates that the Jedi are peacekeepers of the galaxy and that their strength and might only be used to defend and protect others. Jedi also have to be above their own feelings. This in no way means acting without emotion; the Jedi are simply not allowed to make their decisions out of anger, sadness, fear, or joy. You must decide objectively to serve and keep the peace. The strength of the Jedi is based on the three pillars of discipline, knowledge and power . The Jedi Knights of the Old Order also led a marriage and childless existence, while the Jedi Knights of the New Order (under Luke Skywalker) were allowed to marry and have children.

The farewell of the Jedi is: " May the force be with you " (in the original: " May the Force be with you ")

The phenomenon of power is not further defined in Episodes IV-VI. The power applies where - based on Far Eastern principles such as the Chi - as something that connects all life and even inanimate nature together, without the need for a rational explanation. Every child can be blessed with the "power"; it doesn't have to be inherited.

In the prequel films (episodes I-III), the midi-chlorians, peculiar to the living beings of the Star Wars universe, are thematized: symbiotic microorganisms in the cells that function as a communicative link between power and living beings. The midi-chlorian concentration in the blood indicates how much power someone has. Basically every living being has midi-chlorians, but you can only control power from a certain concentration, for example to let objects float, to influence other living beings or to subordinate them to your own will.

The typical weapon of a Jedi is the lightsaber . Every Padawan (a Jedi student) learns how to assemble a lightsaber in his training. In the handle of the lightsaber there is an energy-bundling crystal (cyber crystal). These crystals are found in certain caves on the planets Ilum and Dantooine, among others. When a Jedi student is to receive his lightsaber, he and his master travel to this planet, where the student then has to go into the cave alone to find the crystal “intended” for him. In this cave the student will encounter his deepest fears in the form of hallucinations. A bundled energy beam about one meter long comes out of the lightsaber and emerges from a handy handle, switched by a button. It can also be used by non-everyone, as Han Solo demonstrated in Episode V when he slit open the belly of a dead animal to save Luke from freezing to death in the warm carcass .

However, some Jedi have built the activation button inside their sword so that the weapon can only be used by Force users.

Hierarchy at the time of the Old Republic

Youth / Jedi candidate

The young men / Jedi aspirants are children who are susceptible to power due to their sufficiently high midi-chlorian value and who live in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant for the purpose of their education , where they are taught by the experienced Jedi such as Yoda . From the age of 13 they begin their training as padawans. If by their 13th birthday they haven't found a Jedi Knight who is ready to train them, they will have to leave the Jedi Temple and join other areas, such as the Agriculture Corps, Jedi Healers, or Jedi Security , used.

Padawan

Padawans are students who accompany and are taught by a trained Jedi. At the end of their training, a padawan must pass certain exams to be named a Jedi Knight. The role of a padawan can be compared to that of a squire in the Middle Ages.

Jedi Knight

A padawan who has successfully completed his training is raised to the rank of Jedi Knight. The term Jedi Knight is the new rank of the user of power, but the knights are again divided into three groups:

  1. Jedi Envoys : The Jedi Order Envoys focus on the intellectual study of power after training to become a Knight. Often envoys act as diplomats and are peacemakers of the order. They are sent by the council to areas threatened by war. The ambassadors are not inexperienced in combat, but neither are they particularly talented. Many Messengers, as their skills grow, slowly acquire the ability to see shadows of the future in power. The ambassador's lightsaber color is traditionally green, but this is not a requirement.
  2. Jedi Guardians : The Guardians seek the balance between power studies and combat training. The Guardians are often used as generals when the Republic needs the help of the Jedi. A guard is trained to find solutions to problems ahead. A powerful skill that only some Guardians could control was combat meditation. This is what the Jedi called the ability to give the allied soldiers more courage and security, while the opponent's will to fight was downright withdrawn, which was often enough to win the battle. The traditional lightsaber color of the Guardians is yellow.
  3. Jedi Guardians : The Guardians learn some basic Force techniques, but remain more focused on combat training. In the event of war, the Order mainly sends Guardians to assist Republican troops. The traditional lightsaber color of the guardians is blue or green (example: Anakin Skywalker, later Darth Vader, and Master Obi-Wan Kenobi).

The Jedi Knights can reach an even higher rank by passing another test. After this test, the knight can be raised to the rank of master, security guard or armorer. Many choose the path of the master and then train students to become padawans or padawans to become knights. The path of guards and armourers was not often chosen in the last few years before Darth Sidious destroyed the republic .

The path of armorer was often chosen by guardians, because this title corresponded most to their previous training. The weapon masters often mastered not only the techniques of the Jedi, but also other fighting styles, for example those of the Echani.

The guards can best be described as agents who tried to expose and bring to light the injustices in the galaxy. This path was mainly chosen by former guards and envoys.

A Jedi Knight can take a Padawan as a student.

Jedi master

The rank of Jedi Master is given to Jedi Knights who are very powerful and wise. Training a padawan to knight can expedite the appointment. The most important requirement for the nomination as Jedi Master by the Council of Jedi is compliance with the code. Jedi Masters act according to the order and are entrusted with the most difficult tasks. The most powerful and wisest of them are on the Jedi Council. The most famous Jedi Masters are Master Yoda and Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Jedi Council

The Jedi Council meets regularly in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and is formed by the twelve Jedi Masters. The term of office of the individual council members is determined differently: some Jedi Masters are council members for life, others can be elected and deselected and some are only called to serve in the council for a fixed period of time.

The Jedi Council reports directly to the Intergalactic Senate and is solely responsible to it. Chancellor Palpatine , who was given special powers by the Senate in Episode III due to the war situation, appoints Anakin Skywalker against the will of the Jedi as his personal representative on the council. Palpatine's goal is to control the Jedi Council. Anakin Skywalker is the second Jedi , after Ki-Adi-Mundi , to be a member of the Council without having previously been promoted to the rank of Master. His place on the council corresponds more to that of a spy than that of a recognized council member, which increases the distrust between him and the Jedi and finally Anakin overflows to the dark side of the force .

The council decides most Jedi affairs; Among other things, which children will be admitted as youths, when a padawan is ready for his training, which Jedi knight will be appointed master and who will be admitted to the Jedi Council.

The Jedi Council has five members for life, four members who are free to resign unless they are voted out of office, and three members whose membership is limited in time. The latter in particular serve to convey new ideas and the views of the Order to the Council.

As part of the extermination operation ( Order 66 ) ordered by Emperor Darth Sidious , almost all Jedi, including the members of the council, are murdered in " Revenge of the Sith ", whereupon the council dissolves itself. In the aftermath, the Jedi are ostracized by the self-proclaimed emperor and ultimately almost completely wiped out. How many Jedi can evade the Empire's grasp is unclear; the only (from the films known) Jedi whose whereabouts are known, Obi-Wan and Yoda , the exiled in exterior edge go (Outer Rim), outside the sphere of influence imperial. Obi-Wan Kenobi hides on Tatooine , guarding the adolescent Luke Skywalker while Yoda retreats to Dagobah .

History of the Jedi Order

Originally launched as a philosophical research community, the Jedi Order has its origins in the early days of the Republic, 25,000 years before the Battle of Yavin (zero point in the Star Wars era). The first Jedi spent decades pondering the mysterious energy field of power . It is through this that they have become masters in handling this energy and using their abilities to help others. The Jedi of the Galactic Republic served as peacemakers for over 25,000 years, and their interplanetary exploits were legendary. But some of them realized that power can also be used to gain strength and influence and turned to the dark side, which was then still called Boga. These Jedi began a war against the followers of Ashla, the light side, which took place on Tython, the planet where power was discovered. The light side was able to defeat the dark side, but the trust of the first Jedi in the power was badly shaken and they withdrew to the remote world of Ossus. Defending the republic against the Hutts and other threats, they soon joined the republic, relocating their headquarters to the republic's capital, Coruscant.

Since any emotional involvement can distract a Jedi from his mission and selfishness and greed can pull him over to the dark side of the Force , many guidelines and customs evolved to maintain balance in the Order. A Jedi was advised against marriage, with a few exceptions; a Jedi aspirant was rarely more than six years old when he began training.

7000 VSYs split dark Jedi from the Order. Although they were defeated, some survivors fled to Korriban, where they encountered the primitive Sith civilization. They could easily impress them with their powers of power and the Sith made them their rulers. The blood of the Dark Jedi and the Sith blended from generation to generation and the new realm of the Dark Jedi was now called "Sithimperium" after the red-skinned species of Korriban. 2000 years later the Sith returned and attacked the Republic and the Jedi under their new dark lord Naga Sadow. After initial difficulties, the invasion was repulsed and the republic sent its forces to Korriban to finally destroy the Sith.

Over the next 1500 years, self-appointed Sith Lords opposed the republic again and again, e.g. E.g. the former Jedi Exar Kun, who, together with another fallen Jedi and the Mandalorians, plunged the galaxy into war, or the two war heroes Revan and Malak ( see below ). But they weren't Sith. Some of the true Sith, believed by the Jedi and the Republic to have been defeated in the Great Hyperspace War ( see above ), were able to escape the annihilation of their civilization and, after a long odyssey through the galaxy, settled in the jungle world under the leadership of their new emperor Dromund Kaas down and began planning their revenge on the Jedi.

About 4000 years VSY, the Mandalorians started their great crusade against the Republic from the outer fringes of the then known universe (whose border was the end of the Outer Rim). Their only concern was to garner more and more honor for their people through mighty victories. The Jedi Council decided not to intervene in the war. As the republic had to accept defeat after defeat, the knights Revan and Malak did not want to wait any longer. Many joined their movement. They went to war, which in the Council's view should never have taken place. However, after the final battle on Malachor V, in which thousands of Jedi, Republican soldiers and Mandalorians were killed by the use of the shadow generator (a machine that created an artificial gravitational field that crushed the soldiers), Revan and Malak turned against them Republic itself. The general in command of the Battle of Malachor V returned to the council to be judged. The council, which consisted only of the Jedi masters Kavar, Vrook Lamar, Atris, Zez-Kai'Ell and Lonna Vash, banished these Jedi. In the Second Jedi Civil War, the remnants of the Jedi Order and the Republic fought against the Sith and their soldiers. The Jedi Bastila managed to capture Revan after he was seriously injured in an ambush by his student Malak. The second Jedi Council on Dantooine (which then consisted of Masters Dorak, Vandar Tokare (of the same people as Yoda), Zhar Lestin, and Vrook Lamar) erased Revan's memory and created a new personality to serve the Republic. Later, on a trip with Bastila, Revan learned personally from Malak who he was. Revan later ended the Civil War by putting Malak in the Star Forge and killing him, he was rewarded with the highest Republican honor along with Carth Onasi, a senior Republican pilot. After that, he finally left the known universe with an unknown destination.

Ten years after the Second Jedi Civil War, the republic was on the verge of collapse. Many planets split off. That was largely due to the condition of the Jedi Order: it no longer existed. Only the former Council of Coruscant had survived Sith attacks like on Katarr. All Jedi and Miraluka (the indigenous people of Qatar with strong ties to power) were killed in a single day. Thereupon the five masters decided to only investigate undercover, to hide and to wait until the threat is revealed. At that moment the exiled general returned. The Sith completely destroyed the planet Peragus II because of their presence. But she escaped. The exile sought out all the masters to understand why she had lost her connection to power after the war and why it was now returning. After all Jedi Masters except Atris (who was addicted to the dark side, just didn't want to admit it) and Lonna Vash (who was killed by the Sith) were gathered on Dantooine, the first Sith Lord revealed himself. Darth Traya, who had accompanied the exile under the name of Kreia, revealed her true self and killed the last three masters of the order. Then the exile traveled to Telos to investigate the whereabouts of Darth Traya after her escape. There she had to face Atris. After defeating them, she boarded the ship of the second Lord of the Sith, Darth Nihilus, together with the new Mandalore (the leader of the Mandalorians) and Visas Marr, the last Miraluka. After he, too, was destroyed, there was only one hurdle to overcome. The exile had learned from Atris that Traya was staying on Malachor V, the place where the fate of the exiles was to be fulfilled. On Malachor the exiles also met the third and last of the lords: Darth Sion. He had fallen deepest of all and drew his strength from the dark side and all life around him. After Sion's death the way to the Trayus kern was clear, where the fight between the exile and Darth Traya broke out. After this last Lord of the Sith had finally found his death, the exile reactivated the shadow generator a second time with the help of one of her travel companions, the Zabrak Bao-Dur, and finally destroyed Malachor V. While the Exiled Revan followed into the unknown regions, the Jedi Order was rebuilt by the Companions of the Exiled.

But the next crisis was already looming. The Sith Empire returned from exile in the Outer Rim in 3681 VSY and attacked the Republic in a large-scale offensive. The republic was taken completely by surprise and unprepared. Although the advance of the Sith in the Mid Rim could be stopped, the republic came under pressure due to acute supply bottlenecks due to an imperial blockade, as many systems split off, and protests even on Coruscant, the main world of the republic and seat of the Jedi Council the missing supplies. After 28 years of war, the Empire made an offer of peace to the Republic and the Jedi. Diplomats from both parties met on Alderaan, but the Sith wanted one last negotiating advantage. Since the most powerful Jedi were on Alderaan to protect the diplomats, it was not difficult for a Sith raiding party to raid the Jedi Temple from there, shut down the planetary defense and devastate Coruscant. With Coruscant hostage, the Sith were able to negotiate a peace treaty that placed much of the galaxy under Imperial rule. Since they came under criticism from the Senators, the Jedi withdrew to their rediscovered original world Tython.

For the next few years, a cold war raged between the two great powers, and both sides prepared for another outbreak of war. Both the republic and the empire expected another war and began to construct weapons of mass destruction. Although there was officially peace, there were repeated attacks in the neutral area and along the borders. So the republic sent z. For example, they secretly sent their elite troops to the planet Balmorra, which was de facto under imperial rule, but the occupiers had been in a tough guerrilla war with various rebel cells for years.

In the year 2000 VSY the Jedi Knight Phanius found a holocron in which the paths to the dark side were explained in more detail. He called himself Darth Ruin, left the order along with 50 other Jedi and founded his new Sith empire. Ruin was killed by his followers, but his new Sith Empire plunged the Jedi and the Republic into another galaxy-wide conflict. Though the influence of the Sith increased in the following centuries, they could not destroy the Jedi because they fought themselves in bloody civil wars. The Brotherhood of Darkness was able to prevail against the other factions. The Sith Darth Bane wanted to reform the Sith Order, which is why he destroyed the Brotherhood and left the Jedi in the belief that the Sith were finally destroyed. Over the next 1,000 years, the Jedi and the Republic experienced a period of prosperity and peace, while the Sith, who followed Bane's rule of two, according to which there can only be two Siths, covertly sought revenge wait.

They saw this possibility come in the year 22 VSY when Darth Tyranus, the student of Darth Sidious, who had a dual identity as Chancellor Palpatine, caused a number of star systems to split off from the Republic. These separatists started a war against the republic, which set up a clone army for their defense, led by the Jedi as generals. Three years later, Darth Sidious, who secretly controlled both warring parties, revealed himself and transformed the republic into the first galactic empire. He seduced the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to the dark side and declared the Jedi to be enemies of the state, which is why they were hunted and killed by their clone troops on the basis of Order 66.

At the time of the empire from 19 VSY (before the Battle of Yavin) to 4 NSY, the order of the Jedi was considered destroyed. After the empire was defeated, however, the order was re-founded by a Jedi named Luke Skywalker and placed in the service of the new republic. Under the leadership of Skywalker, the new age of the Jedi began. His Jedi Academy was established on one of the moons of Yavin (Yavin IV).

He changed various behavioral guidelines of the Jedi, including the requirement that a master may only instruct one student at a time. Due to the lack of trained Jedi, such a master always taught a group of students. Furthermore, Luke Skywalker later married Mara Jade (this is not part of the official canon ) and thus overridden another policy. Since Luke was not familiar with these old guidelines, the new Jedi Order was structured differently than the old one.

In the new republic, while some of the rigid rules of the Code were removed, it did not affect a Jedi's commitment to advocating peace and justice in the galaxy.

Sith

In addition to the Jedi, there is also an order that makes use of the dark side of the Force : the Sith Order. After the Sith almost exterminated each other in the early days, the order now consists of only one master and one student. This rule of two, introduced Darth Bane. The student is inferior to the master until he destroys him and becomes the master himself with a new student. This system is intended to avoid power struggles within the Sith order and to strengthen the entire order.

Each Sith has an individual Sith name with the title Darth . It was long suspected that the title was derived from Dar k Lord of the Si th . In the meantime, however, it seems more likely that it is derived from the word "Daritha", which in the language of the Rakata, a reptilian alien species, means something like "ruler", "great king" or "emperor". The first Sith Lord to hold this title was Darth Revan , a former Master of the Jedi Order. According to contradicting Sith legends, a mysterious Dark Lord of the Sith named Andeddu , who managed to continue to exist in his grave until 137 NSY, was the first to use this title.

Like the Jedi, the Sith also master the fight with the lightsaber , preferring specimens with a red, synthetic crystal. The most powerful Sith also have dark abilities like the Force Lightning.

history

Approx. 7,000 years before the events of the Star Wars films, some Jedi knights turned their backs on the Jedi Order and fell into the dark side of the Force. Expelled by the order and hunted by their former masters, they fled from the core worlds to the outer fringes, the Outer Rim. There they met a relatively underdeveloped species on the planet Korriban, but for whom it was commonplace to use power for their own benefit and who knew no rules for their use: the Sith. The Dark Jedi subjugated these people, and they were henceforth worshiped as gods. However, they learned from the Sith just as they learned from them. Over time, the dark Jedi merged with the Sith.

Centuries passed in which the Jedi almost forgot the Sith, but during this time the Sith built an empire in the Outer Rim. As a result, there were repeated armed conflicts and wars between the Republic and the Sith, such as the Great Hyperspace War and the First and Second Sith War (or Jedi Civil War).

After the fall of the Galactic Empire, a secret cult was founded around the last living Sith Lord Darth Sidious , who worked on the plan to restore the Order of the Sith to their old power. For decades, the cult of the Sith Eternals built a huge fleet of Star Destroyers on the planet Exegol to subjugate the galaxy again after all these years. In an ancient occult ritual, the weakened Darth Sidious was supposed to regain his strength through his granddaughter Rey in order to unite the power of all deceased Sith in him. However, Darth Sidious was killed in one final fight by his granddaughter and with his death the Sith were destroyed once and for all.

Other medals

In addition to the order of the Jedi and that of the Sith, there were also other orders of power users who did not depend on either of the two great ones and whose codes were partially or completely different.

For example, there was the Order of the Jal Shey, a group of beings very powerful in power who were focused on maintaining peace in the galaxy. However, unlike the Jedi, they completely rejected violence. Strictly speaking, they were the real Jedi, as they liked to call themselves pacifists. The Jal Shey were wiped out by the Sith as they did not resist and hid until the last of them was destroyed.

In addition to the order of the Jal Shey, there was the community of Zeison-Sha. This group consisted of members of the Kel-Dor people who used their power to survive in the extreme conditions of their homeworld. They are not bound by any fixed code, but there are certain guidelines among them that the members had to follow. The Zeison-Sha interfered little in the affairs of others other than their own people.

Another order is the Matukai. This order did not distinguish between different categories of training, there were only students and masters. The Masters formed the Council of the Order, similar to that of the Jedi. The Matukai let their spirits drift in power and were thus capable of physical feats that a Jedi or Sith would never have been possible. The robes of this order were traditionally green.

There was no medal for this group of power users, but the group of the Gray Jedi should also be mentioned. Gray Jedi are all those who have been expelled from the Order or who have turned away from the teachings of the Jedi, but this does not mean that they have fallen for the dark side. Often Jedi left the Order because they fell in love, preferred to follow their instincts or want to build emotional bonds. One of the most famous Gray Jedi is Jolee Bindo, who together with Revan and his companions destroyed the Star Forge.

However, it is not absolutely necessary to belong to any order. This was proven by Darth Traya after the Second Jedi Civil War. Although she held the title of Sith Lord (Darth), she was not one of them. On the contrary. Traya (or Kreia, as she called herself during her exile by the Jedi Council; see History of the Jedi Order) saw the Jedi and the Sith not as two opposing parties, but as two parts of a whole. That was the power. Traya believed that the Force has a will of its own that would bring ruin to the galaxy. Through the Exile, she wanted the Force to die, and all Jedi and Sith with her. Traya had realized that the separation of the exiles had created a rift in power and she hoped to use the exile to enlarge the rift and thus destroy the power. But that never happened because Traya was killed by the exile in the Trayus core on Malachor V.

"Jedi" in the real world

Due to the great popularity of Star Wars , population censuses , especially in English-speaking countries, keep responding to the fact that the religion was "Jedi".

In Australia , in an official census in 2001, around 70,000 people named "Jedi" as their religion after an Internet visit. According to the emails, this should ensure that Jedi are recognized as an official religion. However, after the survey, the Australian Bureau of Statistics made it clear that the answer to the question of religion has no bearing on possible recognition - and that the question has always been optional. The answer “Jedi” was therefore added to the “undefined” column.

In the 2001 census, hundreds of thousands of Britons pretended to be "Jedi Knights" in their creed.

Today there are various Jedi orders, some of them in Germany. One of the most famous orders in German-speaking countries is the Order of Hope (short: OOH). Its members view Jediism as a philosophy.
