A start pistol is an acoustic signal generator for the start of sporting competitions . It is mainly used in athletics , track cycling , sailing and triathlon .

Signals

The starting shot is given after the referee has given a preparatory command, for example "On your marks - ready". If there is a false start , a second shot is fired to signal the termination of the run.

Starting pistols are usually specially manufactured signaling devices that often have their origins in real weapons. Its barrel is perforated on the sides so that the gas can escape and is blocked at the front, which makes it impossible to convert the starter pistol into a firearm . This is to permanently ensure that it is not a firearm . Only hot gases are passed through the barrel, while the firearm property is only given when a projectile is driven through a barrel.

Blank cartridges serve as ammunition .

Electronics are usually attached to the pistol, which register the firing and emit an electronic signal. With this, the stopwatches are started automatically and the loudspeakers on the individual lanes sound so that the signal arrives at each athlete at the same time.

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , for the first time, a gun was no longer used in the conventional sense, but a device that emits an acoustic, electronic and visual signal.

Legal

According to § 12 / III of the Weapons Act, a starting pistol does not require a gun license. However, approval from the authorities may be required , particularly for noise protection . This particularly applies to competitions in gyms and outside stadiums .
