The Staubernbahn , also called the Staubernbähnli , is a gondola that connects the Berggasthaus Staubern ( 1745  m above sea level ) on the Staubernkanzel ( 1860  m above sea level ) with the village of Frümsen ( 490  m ) in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley . The train runs every hour from 7 a.m. / 9 a.m. (depending on the season) to 10 p.m., more often if necessary. It has two gondolas with a capacity of eight people each. The first mountain railway was built in 1979, initially as a material ropeway. In 2001 the mountain railway was converted for public transport with two gondolas for six people each.

Due to new regulations in the cable car area, a completely new cable car was planned in 2016, which was built a few meters southwest of the old cable car. In autumn 2017, construction began on the new cable car, which, unlike its predecessor, has three instead of four masts . It was inaugurated on April 6, 2018 and cost five million francs.

The system is a world first because it is operated solely with solar power and is considered to be the world's first battery-operated cable car. For this purpose, a photovoltaic system was installed at the valley station . The electricity for the 51 kW system is temporarily stored. The cable car's suspension cable is also used to supply the mountain restaurant. Before the new cable car opened, the restaurant was supplied with electricity by two diesel generators . The energy concept was developed with the help of scientists from the NTB in Buchs . The cable car system was developed and built by Flumser Bartholet Maschinenbau AG . The old system was dismantled in spring 2018.

accident

On October 30, 2018, the last day of operation of the season, the downhill cabin jumped out of the suspension cable and fell 12 meters to the ground. Since this cabin was empty, no one was harmed. The people in the opposite cabin had to be evacuated.
