Location of the former village of Staufenberg

Staufenberg is a former place on the plateau south of Berschweiler bei Kirn in the Birkenfeld district . The place was ravaged by the plague in 1635 and abandoned. The desert lies on the Sirona-Weg , an old Roman route through the Nahe region .

The farms and houses of the place were scattered around the Staufenbergskopf. Remains from pre-Roman, Roman and medieval times have been found over the entire local area, including a Roman copper coin. According to the Bergen church book, Staufenberg must have still existed during the Thirty Years' War . In 1627 a resident of Staufenberg stayed in Herrstein because of the general uncertainty . In 1637 a "Wittib von Stauffenberg (see above ! )" Died of starvation in Kirn and the last surviving inhabitant is said to have died in 1643.

Today a memorial stone reminds of the former place Staufenberg. The memorial stone was erected in 1981 by the Herrstein Association and contains the inscription:

“Staufenberg used to be in this area. It was first mentioned in a document in 1404 and in 1469 it was temporarily not settled, but in 1515 it was owned by Johann VII. Von Kyrburg . In the years after 1567 there were disputes with neighboring communities about grazing. In 1595 Staufenberg was owned by Johann I von Pfalz-Zweibrücken . In 1630 there were 12 family names in the place, which consisted of 20 houses. Most of its inhabitants worked in the nearby mines. In 1635, Stauffenberg was hit by the plague, abandoned and no longer rebuilt. In 1867 the district was divided between Bergen and Berschweiler. "
