Paul Schruers

Paul Schruers (born October 25, 1929 in Hasselt , Belgium ; † August 24, 2008 there ) was the second bishop of the Hasselt diocese .

Life

Paul Schruers first studied humanities , then Catholic theology at the seminaries in Sint-Truiden and Liège . He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1954.

He studied philosophy and art at the University of Leuven and received his doctorate in theology . From 1957 to 1967 he was professor of dogmatics at the seminary in Liège. From 1959 to 1966 he was also Provincial of the Katholieke Student Share (KSA) . In 1967 he became vicar general in Hasselt and was responsible for founding the Hasselt diocese.

On April 25, 1970 Schruers was by Pope Paul VI. appointed titular bishop of Slebte and auxiliary bishop in Hasselt. The bishop of Hasselt, Jozef-Maria Heusschen , donated him episcopal consecration on May 31, 1970; Co- consecrators were Guillaume Marie van Zuylen , Bishop of Liege , and Jules Victor Daem , Bishop of Antwerp .

On September 12, 1972, Schruers was appointed coadjutor bishop to the incumbent Bishop of Hasselt, Jozef-Maria Heuschen . With his resignation on December 15, 1989, he succeeded him as Bishop of Hasselt.

Pope John Paul II granted his age-related resignation on October 25, 2004.
