Jozef-Maria Heusschen

Jozef-Maria Heusschen (born July 12, 1915 in Tongeren , † June 30, 2002 in Hasselt ) was a Belgian clergyman and the first bishop of Hasselt .

Life

Jozef-Maria Heusschen studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he obtained a degree in theology and philosophy. On September 10, 1939, in Liège, he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Liège .

Heusschen had to interrupt his further studies in Rome in 1940 due to the war. He initially taught at the boys' college in Sint-Truiden . He graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven with a degree in oriental languages ​​and history. From 1942 he was professor of exegesis at the seminary in Liège. In 1953 he was made an honorary canon at St. Paul's Cathedral in Liège. Bishop Louis-Joseph Kerkhofs appointed him vicar general in 1959 .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on July 25, 1962 titular bishop of Druas and auxiliary bishop in Liège. The Bishop of Liège, Guillaume-Marie van Zuylen , donated him episcopal ordination on September 21 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Namur , André Marie Charue , and the Bishop of Bruges , Emiel-Jozef De Smedt . As a motto he chose Credidimus caritati - We have recognized the love that God has for us, and we have faithfully accepted it ( 1 Jn 4:16  EU ). He was given pastoral responsibility for the Province of Limburg ; he took up residence in Hasselt.

He participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father. At the beginning of the council he was appointed a member of the theological commission and worked on council documents such as Lumen Gentium , Dei Verbum and Gaudium et Spes .

On June 13, 1967, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as the first bishop of the Hasselt diocese, established two weeks earlier . The canonical establishment of the diocese took place on July 8 of the same year. Heusschen's inauguration took place one day later. In addition to building up the structures of the new diocese, Heusschens campaigned for the implementation of the council resolutions and the commitment of the laity . For five years he was a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and, in the ecclesiastical province, chairman of the theological commission and responsible bishop for the areas of Caritas and family pastoral care.

As early as 1970, Heusschen asked for a release from the leadership of the Hasselt diocese for health reasons. Instead, Pope Paul VI asked him. in Paul Schruers an auxiliary bishop to the side of 1972 as coadjutor received wide powers. The resignation was only accepted on December 15, 1989 by Pope John Paul II .

Jozef-Maria Heusschen found his final resting place in the St. Quintinus Cathedral in Hasselt.
