Systematics
Order : Astern-like (Asterales)
Family : Daisy family (Asteraceae)
Subfamily : Asteroideae
Tribe : Inuleae
Genre : Pallenis
Type : Piercing star eye
Scientific name
Pallenis spinosa
( L. ) Cass.

The Blazing star eye ( Pallenis spinosa ) is a plant from the family of the daisy family (Asteraceae). The species is very rich in shape.

description

The piercing star eye is an annual plant that reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant is hairy protruding. The base of the hair is thickened. The leaves are short-pointed and have an ear-shaped, half-stem encompassing base.

The outer bracts are 1.5 to 4 inches long, thorn-pointed and much longer than the ray-flowers. The ray-flowers are golden yellow and two to three rows. The outer fruits are winged, the inner ones have a prism-shaped pappus made of hair-shaped, slit scales.

The flowering period extends from June to probably August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 10.

Occurrence

The piercing star eye occurs in the Mediterranean and the Orient . The species grows on dry limestone cliffs, rock corridors and ruderal.

Systematics

The piercing star eye was first described by Carl von Linné as Buphthalmum spinosum in 1753 . Alexandre Henri Gabriel de Cassini placed them in the newly created genus Pallenis in 1825 . In 1844 Karl Heinrich Schultz then set it up as Asteriscus spinosus . While Annette Wiklund (1985) placed the Stinging Star Eye in the genus Asteriscus , it was placed back in the genus Pallenis together with other species as part of the nomenclature revision of the genus by Werner Greuter in 1997 . Later molecular biological investigations confirmed this classification. As a sister taxon to the clade from the other two species Pallenis hierichuntica and Pallenis maritima, the stinging star eye is the most basic species of the genus.

The piercing star eye is divided into four subspecies:

  • Pallenis spinosa subsp. asteroidea (Viv.) Greuter , widespread in the eastern Mediterranean area.
  • Pallenis spinosa subsp. aurea (optional) Nyman , common in Spain, Portugal and northern Morocco.
  • Pallenis spinosa subsp. maroccana (Aurich & Podlech) Greuter , common in Morocco and western Algeria.
  • Pallenis spinosa (L.) Cass. subsp. spinosa : its distribution largely coincides with the species.

use

The piercing star eye is rarely used as an ornamental plant.
