Stefaan Maene

Stefaan Maene (born May 13, 1972 in Ostend ) is a former Belgian swimmer. In the mid-1990s he was one of the best back and intermediate swimmers in his country. In the course of his career he set 78 Belgian national records.

Maene landed his first success in 1992 at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona , when he qualified over 200 meters back for the final and finally swam to seventh place. He won his first medal in 1993 at the World Short Course Championships in Palma , where he was third over 200 meters back. He confirmed this achievement in 1995 at the European Swimming Championships in Vienna with the bronze medal over 100 meters back.

In 2007 he attempted a comeback for the Olympic Games in Beijing. In his biography "100 meter tegenslag" he confessed to having doped with anabolic steroids , Clenbuterol and Ventolin .
