Stefan Werner Dech (* 1960 in Rockenhausen ) is a German geographer , university professor and, since 1998, director of the German Remote Sensing Data Center of the DLR .

Life

Stefan Dech graduated from high school in 1980 . In 1987 he finished his geography studies at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg with a diploma . This was followed by a two-year doctoral degree at the German Research and Research Institute for Aerospace (DFVLR; now the German Aerospace Center; DLR) and in 1990 the doctorate to become Dr. rer. nat. From 1989 Dech was a scientific employee and head of the working group "Value Adding and Visualization " at the German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) of the DLR. In 1995 he took over the management of the remote sensing application department, and in 1997 he completed his habilitation at the University of Würzburg in the subject of geography with his thesis "Methodology of operational procedures in satellite remote sensing for deriving geophysical parameters". He has been a lecturer at the Universities of Eichstätt , Munich and Würzburg since 1992 . From 1993 he was a supervisor for diploma and doctoral theses at the universities of Mainz , Eichstätt and Marburg .

In 1998 Dech became director of the DFD and private lecturer at the Institute for Geography of his alma mater . Since 2001 he has been a full professor for remote sensing and holder of the newly created chair of the same name . From 2000 to 2002 he was also acting head of the DLR Institute for Remote Sensing Methods. In 2004 he spent three months researching at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego .

Research areas

Stefan Dech deals with the fundamentals, methods, processes and systems of remote sensing, in particular research into global change using remote sensing methods. Further research focuses are the conception of crisis information systems for natural disasters, e.g. B. the tsunami early warning as well as the exploration of the environment and terrestrial ecosystems .
