Stefan Esders (born July 6, 1852 in Haren an der Ems ; † September 15, 1920 in Vienna ; also Stephan Esders ) was a Belgian-Austrian entrepreneur.

Live and act

Stefan Esders and his brother Henri Esders founded a large clothing factory in Brussels with branches in Berlin, Paris, St. Petersburg, Rotterdam and Vienna. There was a heated political dispute about his department store at the large factory ( Mariahilfer Strasse 18), which was built in Vienna in 1895 . Esders was the first in Vienna to introduce a system of profit sharing (bonus payments) for its employees.

Together with his brother, Esders was the main donor of the Emsland Cathedral in his birthplace Haren . He settled in Vienna and founded the Kaasgraben Church . On September 20, 1920 he was buried there in the crypt designed by Hans Schwathe .

The square in front of the Kaasgraben Church and his former villa was named after him in his honor by the City of Vienna in 1935; At the time of the installation in 1912 it was called Hohenwartplatz and from 1917 Ettinghausenplatz .

The Esders villa

His former residence at today's Stefan-Esders-Platz 1, which, like his department store and the church he donated, was built around 1910 by the architects Franz Kupka (1855-1924) and Gustav Orglmeister (1861-1953) Death handed over to the Order of the Sisters of the Poor Children of Jesus . It was converted into the Clara Fey Children's Village and expanded with several additions and is now, together with the large park, a special school of the order.
