Stefan Mayr

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stefan Mayr (* 1969 ) is an Austrian botanist and lecturer at the University of Innsbruck .

Life

Stefan Mayr studied biology with a focus on ecology at the University of Innsbruck from 1988 and completed his diploma thesis in 1993 with Walter Larcher at the Institute of Botany. In 1996 Mayr did his doctorate with Wolfgang Doppler and Hans Grunicke from the Institute for Medicinal Chemistry and Biochemistry on signal transduction in mouse milk epithelial cells with excellent success.

His scientific career began in 1995 as a research assistant at the Institute for Medicinal Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Innsbruck. In 1996 Mayr became Helmut Bauer's assistant at the Institute of Botany in the field of plant physiology . In 2003 he completed his habilitation in botany at the University of Innsbruck. Mayr has headed the " Ecophysiology " research group since 2004 and has held the chair for botany / water balance of plants at the University of Innsbruck since October 2011.

In addition, Mayr is managing director of the company ÖKOM, which works as a technical office for ecology in the fields of nature conservation and landscape planning.

research

Plant hydraulics is at the center of his research activities . Mayr combines basic research on alpine species and plants at lower altitudes with application-oriented projects in the fields of forestry , agriculture and nature conservation .

Private

In addition to his research activities, Mayr is involved in projects in the fields of art , comedy and science communication . Mayr is the winner of the 5th Innsbruck Science Slam (2015). In addition, one of his cartoon series on "How to do Plant Science" was published by the renowned journal " Trends in Plant Science ".

Awards

Mayr was honored with the following prizes:

  • 2002: Prize of the state capital Innsbruck for scientific research at the University of Innsbruck
  • 2003: Science Promotion Prize of the Academic Alpine Association of the University of Innsbruck
  • 2004: Eduard Wallnöfer Prize for research and study projects
