Stefan Piendl

Stefan Piendl (* 1965 ) is a German manager in the music industry. Since 1991 he has held leading positions in the field of classical music. Since July 2018 he has been the sole managing director of the Deutsche Musikrat non-profit project company in Bonn. In addition, he is involved in various honorary posts in German musical life, lectures at several universities and publishes books.

Career

Piendl first completed a commercial apprenticeship in the pharmaceutical sector. His enthusiasm for classical music soon brought him to Sony Music , where he was sales manager for classical music from 1991 to 1995. He then switched to EMI Electrola and was Marketing Director for the EMI Classics and Virgin Classics labels until 1998. During this time u. a. the Celibidache edition. In 1998 he joined the Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) as managing director , where he initiated the Rilke project, which was awarded three gold records. As "Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer BMG Classics, Worldwide" he was then responsible for all of the company's classic activities until 2006. At the beginning of 2006 he returned to EMI Music as a member of the management team. The extensive “Classic Edition” of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit was created there in close conceptual collaboration with Stefan Piendl.

Since May 2007 Piendl has been the managing director of ARION ARTS music consultants GmbH , which specializes in consulting and project management in the music and media sector. ARION ARTS supports u. a. BR KLASSIK, the label for the three orchestras of Bayerischer Rundfunk and the label of the Canadian Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.

In 2011 and 2012, as General Secretary for INTERKULTUR, Piendl was significantly involved in the organization of the 7th World Choir Games in Cincinnati (Ohio). The event, also known as the Choir Olympics, is the largest choir competition in the world with around 15,000 participants from 60 nations.

In autumn 2015, Piendl took over as Head of Communication at SWR Classic for two years. He took over the marketing for the new brand SWR Classic with the classic activities of the station. These include the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Stuttgart Vocal Ensemble, the SWR Experimental Studio, the Big Band as well as the Schwetzingen Festival and the Donaueschinger Musiktage.

Volunteering

Piendl was a member of the presidium of the German Music Council (DMR), on the supervisory board of the Deutsche Musikrat non-profit project company, vice-president of Jeunesses Musicales Germany and chairman of the advisory board of the Federal Youth Orchestra . He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Association of German String Quartets

Publications

Together with Thomas Otto, he published the book Stenographic Embrace - Sergiu Celibidache Taken at His Word , which was also published in Japan in 2007. The second book by the author duo was published for the Musikmesse in March 2007: First of all, tout your horn! - Memories of the legendary record producer and Grammy Award winner Wolf Erichson. In 2008, Piendl and Hans-Herwig Geyer published the Cahier Export Classique Allemagne manual on behalf of the Bureau Export de la Musique Française , a guide to the German music market for French artists and companies.

The miracle of Caracas by Piendl and Michael Kaufmann was published in 2011 . In it, the authors explore the background of the orchestral movement El Sistema in Venezuela, founded in 1975 by José Antonio Abreu .
