Michael Kaufmann (cultural manager)

Michael Kaufmann (born May 25, 1961 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ) is a German cultural manager . He became the first director of the Philharmonie Essen after a complete renovation of the simple post-war building. From 2011 to 2018 he was director of the German State Philharmonic Rhineland-Palatinate in Ludwigshafen .

Life

During his studies of German, rhetoric and ethnology in Tübingen, Kaufmann took over the organizational management of the Baden-Württemberg State Youth Choir . He then was the technical organizer at the Ludwigsburg Festival and manager of the South German Madrigal Choir. In 1988 he founded an office for cultural management and built up the event and visitor service at Deutschlandfunk before returning to the Ludwigsburg Festival as deputy management.

In 1991 Kaufmann took over the orchestra management of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and in 1995 was appointed Operations Director, the operating and service company of the Cologne Philharmonic KölnMusik GmbH . At the same time, he also took over the management of KölnTicket, a regional service provider for ticket sales, and acted as coordinator of the MusikTriennale Köln GmbH from 1993 to 1999 . After working as managing director of Kölnarena Management GmbH, he founded an office for cultural management in the spring of 2000 and was appointed artistic director of the Philharmonie Essen in March 2002 . Kaufmann has been married since 1996.

In 1996 he received an award from the German Phono Academy with the “ Echo Klassik ” special prize for the MusikTriennale Cologne as Festival of the Year. In 1998 he won the German Multimedia Award as a producer of the CD-ROM of the Cologne Philharmonic in the category "Public Affairs / Non-Profit Organizations".

In 2004 Kaufmann was appointed to the advisory board of the German Music Competition . In 2005 he became a personal member of the State Music Council of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2006 he was appointed to the “Echo Klassik” jury by the German Phono Academy and in 2007 to the “Echo Jazz” jury. In 2007 he became a member of the advisory board of the “Essen. Big City for Children ”and received the Würth Prize from Jeunesses Musicales Germany in 2006 , and in 2007 the German Music Publishers Association named the Kaufmanns program in the Philharmonie Essen as“ Concert program of the year for the 2007/2008 season ”.

In 2008 Kaufmann was elected chairman of the board of trustees of the foundation “ Every child an instrument ”. In the same year he was appointed honorary professor at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen and was awarded the “ Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art ” by the Federal President of the Republic of Austria .

On September 23, 2008, Michael Kaufmann was dismissed without notice as director of the Philharmonie Essen, on the grounds that he had exceeded the budget by around twenty percent. As a result, the conductor Kurt Masur immediately canceled his concert with the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam and Nelson Freire, which was planned for December 7, 2008 in the Philharmonie Essen and was already sold out in protest. The concert then took place with both artists.

After the cancellation of the termination without notice and the declaration of honor by Mayor Wolfgang Reiniger in November 2008, Michael Kaufmann ended his work as director of the Philharmonie Essen by amicable termination of the contract in August 2012. Until then, Kaufmann advised the Philharmonie on the programs for the coming seasons and projects for the Capital of Culture 2010.

In 2009 Kaufmann was appointed director of the Kurt Weill Festival and director of the Kurt Weill Center in Dessau . In the same year he became a Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .

In October 2009, the ReSonanz & AkzepTanz integration project initiated by Michael Kaufmann and Klaus Feßmann , which started in 2004 at the Herbart School in Essen, received the jury's Echo Klassik special prize for promoting young talent in the field of classical music. The project was previously awarded the “Mixed up” prize from the Federal Association for Cultural Education for Children and Young People , the “Socially Integrative City” prize from the AWO Federal Association and the German Association of Cities and the “Active for Democracy and Tolerance” prize from the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance been awarded.

In October 2011 the book The Miracle of Caracas about José Antonio Abreu and his El Sistema was published , which Kaufmann wrote together with Stefan Piendl.

From December 2011 until the end of the 2017/2018 season he was director of the German State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate in Ludwigshafen. Under his leadership, it received an Echo Klassik three times in 2013 ("Classical Music for Children"), 2014 ("Promotion of Young Talent") and 2015 ("Orchestra of the Year"). Under his leadership, it received three ECHO Klassik awards in 2013 (“Classical Music for Children”), 2014 (Promotion of Young Talent), 2015 (“Orchestra of the Year”) and in 2018 the newly awarded OPUS KLASSIK (“Concert recording of the year”). In 2017 the German Association of Music Publishers named Michael Kaufmann's programs “Concert Program of the Year” for the 2016/2017 season.

In 2015 he was appointed honorary professor at the Karlsruhe University of Music , and in 2018 he was appointed to the board of trustees of the International Kurt Masur Institute in Leipzig.

In September 2019 Michael Kaufmann founded Prof. Kaufmann Consultants for concept creation, brand development, consulting and project management, especially in the areas of culture, society and education. Since October 2019 he has been a lecturer at the EMBA European Media and Business Academy in Hamburg.
