Stefan Schwab (doctor)

Stefan Schwab (* 1961 in Erlangen ) is a German neurologist and professor of neurology . Since 2006 he has been director of the Neurological Clinic at the University Hospital Erlangen . From 2016 to 2018 he was President of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI). His scientific focus is on stroke medicine, neurological intensive care medicine and experimental therapy methods for the treatment of strokes.

Career

Stefan Schwab studied medicine in Erlangen and Munich . In 1988 he started as a research assistant at the Neurological University Clinic in Würzburg, initially under Hans Georg Mertens and then Klaus Toyka. From 1990 to 1991 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Neuropathology at RWTH Aachen University , before moving to the Neurological University Clinic in Heidelberg in 1991, where he was the senior physician in charge of the clinic under the direction of Werner Hacke until 2005 . During this time there are various study visits. a. at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Schwab has been a full professor and director of the Neurological Clinic at the University Hospital Erlangen since April 2006.

From 2004 to 2006 and from 2008 to 2010 Schwab was President of the German Society for Neurointensive and Emergency Medicine (DGNI). In 2016 he was president of the annual congress of the German Society for Neurology in Mannheim. From 2016 to 2018 he was President of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine.

Schwab is married and has two children.

Act

Schwab's clinical and scientific activities are in the field of cerebrovascular diseases and neurological intensive care medicine . He also initiated the northern Bavarian telemedicine network STENO for the treatment of acute stroke in northern Bavaria together with the Nuremberg Clinic and the Bayreuth Clinic . He was also a member of the city council of Erlangen from 2008 to 2010 and belonged to the CSU parliamentary group.

Schwab is the author or co-author of 450 articles as well as book chapters and monographs listed in PubMed . His h-index was 65 in May 2019. His main research areas are neurointensive medicine, the therapy of intracerebral hemorrhages, stroke medicine, the indication for decompression stretches and other established methods in the treatment of the most severe strokes (so-called malignant media infarctions). He also made contributions to international guidelines on these topics.
