Stefan Thurner
Stefan Thurner (* 1969 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian physicist and complexity researcher. Since 2009 he has been professor for the science of complex systems at the Medical University of Vienna . He has headed the Complexity Science Hub Vienna (CSH) since 2015 . He was named Austrian Scientist of the Year 2017 by the Club of Education and Science Journalists .
Life
Stefan Thurner studied theoretical physics at the University of Vienna and the Technical University of Vienna . After stays at Columbia University (1995/96), Humboldt University Berlin and Boston University (1996/97) , he completed his habilitation in 2001 at the Vienna University of Technology. He completed a second doctoral degree in economics at the University of Vienna.
Thurner has been Professor for the Science of Complex Systems at the Medical University of Vienna since 2009 . Since 2007 he has been an external professor at the Santa Fe Institute , and since 2010 Senior Researcher at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg . Since 2015 he has headed the Complexity Science Hub Vienna (CSH), which he helped initiate , and has been a visiting professor at Nanyang Technological University since 2016 .
In his scientific work, Stefan Thurner deals, among other things, with the fundamentals of complex systems, systemic risk , network medicine, computational social science and financial crises .
