The Steigvorstadt (also Steigsiedlung ) is a historical settlement core of the Lower Franconian town of Marktbreit in the district of Kitzingen . It was created in the 18th century together with the Buheleiten suburb .

Geographical location

The Steigvorstadt connects to the market-wide old town in the south , the old streets are still recognizable today. It formed a junction immediately south of the city wall , which is bordered to the west by the community cemetery . Originally it extended to about 200 m from the city. Today, large parts of the former suburb are built over by railway systems. Only the elements closer to the old town have survived.

The suburb was formed by two streets that were initially unnamed when it was built. The main part of the suburb was on the so-called Chaussee von Uffenheim , which was also popularly called " Enheimer Steig". The name Steigvorstadt, which was first coined by Otto Selzer, is derived from this name. The suburb was formed from the house numbers 216, 218-220 and 224-227 at that time. Today the following streets occupy the buildings of the suburb:

  • Bahnhofstrasse from No. 7/9
  • Bernhard-Fischer-Strasse

history

The market town of Marktbreit received special support from its local lords, the Prince of Schwarzenberg , in the 18th century . They wanted to turn the up-and-coming settlement on the Main into a transshipment point for goods, which is why more and more foreign residents were settled there. The trigger for the construction of two suburbs on the side of the city facing away from the Main was a flood that completely destroyed the crane in February 1784 and also partially eroded the houses of the market broader.

In the course of the construction of the Steigvorstadt, residential buildings began to be built for the first time outside the local fortifications built in the 16th century . Two institutions of the local population had already developed along the former highway, which in an early modern community mostly had no place within the walls. So in 1566 the cemetery was moved in front of the gates and the so-called Seelhaus or Spital was established in house number 103 .

On March 18, 1784, the Schwarzenberg government issued an ordinance on how the suburbs should be laid out. The main objective was explicitly to avoid further flood damage. At first, the government's call did not catch on. Another publication was only brought out in December, which advertised new settlers with grants . The builders of future stone houses should be allowed to remain tax-free and poor were promised a job in the local spinning mill .

While the Buheleiten suburb attracted particular poorer population, emerged in the riser suburbs mostly two-story Mansarddachbauten on Civil circles traufständig were built. Most of the buildings had sweeping stone stairs and were surrounded by a garden area. It all started with the Gasthaus zum Stern of Johann Paulus Bär in 1785. The house at Bahnhofstrasse 21, which marks the end of the suburb today, was completed in 1797.

The suburb consisted of over 15 buildings in the first half of the 19th century. In 1849 the Catholic Ludwig Church was built on the edge of the old town , also because the ordinance on the suburbs promised new citizens free orientation of their (Christian) denomination and the Catholic community in the actually Lutheran community grew strongly. With the demolition of the rising gate in 1856, the old town was connected with the suburb. The construction of the railway in the 1860s largely destroyed the southern part of the Steigvorstadt. The former suburb is classified as a ground monument .
