The Buheleiten-Vorstadt (also Äußere Buheleite ) is a historical settlement core of the Lower Franconian town of Marktbreit in the Kitzingen district . It was created in the 18th century together with the Steigvorstadt .

Geographical location

The Buheleiten suburb is in the west of the market-wide old town , the old streets are still recognizable today. It consisted of a long street that formed the connection to Gnodstadt and several side streets, most of which were designed as dead ends. The suburb ran parallel to the old town in a southwestern direction. Today, large parts of the former suburb are built over by railway systems. Only the elements closer to the old town have survived.

Historically, the suburb was located on the so-called Niedernberg or Galgenberg , which was overgrown with beeches for a long time . The name Buheleiten is also derived from its location. “Bueleiten” was also the first name of the central streets in the suburb. The suburb was formed by the house numbers 270, 275, 277–284, 289, 291–292, 294–298, 305–306 and 309–325. Today the following streets occupy the buildings of the suburb:

  • Buheleite to No. 25 / to the railway line
  • Kaltenhofgasse

history

The market town of Marktbreit received special support from its local lords, the Prince of Schwarzenberg , in the 18th century . They wanted to turn the up-and-coming settlement on the Main into a transshipment point for goods, which is why more and more foreign residents were settled there. The trigger for the construction of two suburbs on the side of the city facing away from the Main was a flood that completely destroyed the crane in February 1784 and also partially eroded the houses of the market broader.

On March 18, 1784, the Schwarzenberg government issued an ordinance on how the suburbs should be laid out. The main objective was explicitly to avoid further flood damage. At first, the government's call did not catch on. Another publication was only brought out in December, which advertised new settlers with grants . The builders of future stone houses should be allowed to remain tax-free and poor were promised a job in the local spinning mill .

While mostly bourgeois classes settled in the Steigvorstadt, the Buheleiten-Vorstadt was built primarily for the poorer sections of the population. Two reasons were decisive for this development: On the one hand, the Buheleitensiedlung grew on harder shell limestone soils , which made the erection of representative buildings difficult, and on the other hand, the suburb was not on a country road. Similar to the Steigvorstadt, a certain engineer Scholl took over the construction management.

The Buheleiten suburb consisted of mostly single-storey buildings with a simple mansard roof and dormers. Similar to the riser settlement the buildings were also traufständig built. However, only a few, original facades of the former houses have survived. They fell victim to modernizations and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. As early as 1863, houses 312 to 315 were torn down when the Würzburg-Treuchtlingen railway was being built. The underground remains of the suburb are classified as a ground monument .
