The church in Marktbreit

The Church of St. Ludwig in Marktbreit , Lower Franconia, is the parish church of the Catholic community. It is on Bahnhofstrasse on the edge of the old town. Today the church is part of the Kitzingen deanery .

history

In 1324, the Nikolauskapelle in Niedernbreit, today's Marktbreit, was elevated to a parish church. The Reformation was introduced in Marktbreit in the 16th century. Until 1591 the entire village was Lutheran. In the 17th century a small Catholic community emerged again in the village. The Lords of Schwarzenberg set up a prayer room in Seinsheim Castle and had the Catholics looked after by Capuchin Fathers from Ochsenfurt .

By 1806 the Catholic community had grown to around 300 people and was made a curate . The Bavarian King Ludwig I then left a piece of land for the church to be built in the 1840s. From 1846 to 1849 the church was built by Andreas Deppisch from Marktbreit. On October 14, 1849, Bishop Georg Anton von Stahl consecrated the new church and subordinated it to the namesake of the King of Bavaria, St. Ludwig .

Shortly after the consecration, in 1855, the curate was raised to an independent parish . In 1927 a sacristy was built north of the choir. In 1956 the church was renovated for the first time. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments has classified the church building as a monument . Underground remains in the ground are recorded as soil monuments. The church is also part of the Altstadt Marktbreit ensemble .

architecture

The church presents itself as a hall , it was made of plastered masonry. It is easted and ends in the east with a uniaxial choir with a five-eighth end . The west portal was adorned with Romanesque jewelry, especially the tympanum with the three crosses corresponds to this style. Two arched windows and an ox eye also structure the west side. The tower was placed on the gable roof on the west side. The bell storey was worked eight-sided.

Furnishing

Bells

The church in Marktbreit has a four-part bell. The oldest of these bells dates from 1925 and was cast in Heidingsfeld. The other bells had to be handed in to be melted down during the Second World War and were only replaced by new ones in 1949.

Further equipment

Behind the main altar and the two side altars in the choir and on the sides of the choir arch there are three murals instead of retables . The fresco of the high altar was painted in 1956 by Willi Jakob from Würzburg . The crucifixion scene is central here. The assistant figures Johannes and Maria frame the crucified Christ. Below you can also see St. Ludwig, the patron saint of the church.

The right side painting shows the picture of St. Joseph. It came to the church as early as 1938. The stations of the foster father of Jesus are shown here: the engagement to Mary , the flight to Egypt , the dream warning, everyday life in Nazareth , the search in the temple and the homecoming of the foster father. On the left is the picture of the Madonna of the Protective Coat. Like the depiction of Joseph, it was painted by Willi Jakob in 1938. The representation refers to the great Marian festivals.

The simple church interior has a few other works of art. A memorial plaque for the fallen parishioners of the First World War was hung on the left back wall , on the right there is the expansive baptismal font and a confessional, which came into the interior of the church at the time of construction. Several figures of saints and a crucifixion group on the nave walls complete the furnishings. The organ rises on the west gallery.
