The chapel in Marktbreit

The Moritzkapelle (popularly Kappel ) in Marktbreit , Lower Franconia, is a former pilgrimage church on the edge of the old buildings. Today the chapel is the memorial chapel for the fallen in the Kitzingen district . Today it is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Dean's Office in Kitzingen .

history

The history of the Moritzkapelle begins in the early 14th century. Back then, in 1324, a chapel was first mentioned on the mountain on which the Roman legion camp had been located in pre-Christian times . The "capella site in monte Gagebhartensberg" (lat. Chapel, located on the Gagebhartensberg) was part of the fortifications on the mountain. The location at that time is, however, unclear.

The chapel was mentioned again in 1504. At that time, two places of worship had been built on the mountain. The "zwu Kapellen uff Sant Moritz" were located at two different locations. The decline of the chapels began at the time of the Reformation . Previously, the Moritzkapelle was the starting point for a pilgrimage of the Marktbreiter, now, in the 16th century, this pilgrimage expired.

Little by little, the unused chapel fell into disrepair. It was not until the 20th century that they were taken up again. In 1936 and 1937 it was converted into a war memorial chapel for the district. Since then, wreaths have been laid here on every day of national mourning for those who died in the two world wars. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the chapel as an architectural monument . Underground remains of previous buildings are listed as soil monuments .

architecture

The church presents itself as a small Gothic hall building . It is geosted and ends with a five-eighth close. On the west side a roof turret was put on, in which a small bell was hung. The chapel ends with a gable roof. The portal is attached to the south side, it was worked as a pointed arch portal. Several ox eyes and lancet windows open up the building.
