Stein Erik Tafjord (born November 2, 1953 in Langevåg ) is a Norwegian tuba player who became internationally known primarily in the field of jazz .

Tafjord comes from a musical family; his brother is the jazz musician Runar Tafjord , his daughter the horn player Hild Sofie Tafjord . He had been a member of Ytre Suløens Jassensemble since 1973 , with whom he released several albums, and in 1979 was one of the first graduates of the Norges musikkhøgskole in Oslo, who were trained on the tuba as the main instrument. He was initially a member of the Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra, but also played jazz at the Kringkastingsorkestret and then worked with the Brazz Brothers , with whom he had released ten albums by 2015. He toured with Scandinavian Tuba Jazz Inc. , Carla Bley's Scandinavian Jazz Ensemble and performed internationally with the big band of the European Broadcasting Union and the Jazz Baltica Ensemble under the direction of David Murray . He can also be heard on albums by Mikhail Alperin , Per Husby , Mikael Rickfors and Jan Magne Førde.

Tafjord teaches tuba at Norges musikkhøgskole . In 1991 he received the Buddyprisen , Norway's most important jazz prize.
