Stone Tower (Dortmund)
The stone tower is a listed historical watchtower in Dortmund not far from the Westfalenhallen .
history
The tower was part of the military defenses of the medieval imperial city . He was part of the Landwehr , stood well in front of the immediate city fortifications of the historic city center and controlled the long-distance trade route leading south towards Cologne. It stands on the historical boundary of the Stadthagens, which has existed since the 13th century, the territory in front of the fortified city, in which municipal law applied.
Dortmund's Stadthagen was fortified in the 14th century. During the Soest feud in the middle of the 15th century, the stone tower was besieged and damaged by enemy troops, and subsequently reinforced in the lower part by thick brick walls. The lower half of the stone tower has been preserved in its original form, the upper half has been reconstructed.
In addition to this southern control room, there were five other guard stations around the city at a comparable distance: the Fredenturm in the north, the Ederloeswarte in the northeast, the Osterruterwarte in the east, the Bergfrede on the Emscher and the Westerruterwarte in the west. The stone tower was later in front of the Hörder Warte to the south on the border between the county of Dortmund and the county of Mark on the Emscher .
The stone tower is registered as a monument in the list of monuments of the city of Dortmund .
