The Stone Age Cellar Platt in the municipality of Zellerndorf , Hollabrunn district in Lower Austria , is housed in a press house with a tree press that is more than 200 years old . It opened in 2007 with only objects from the Stone and Bronze Ages found on site. The motto of the museum is "Stone Age & Wine Age", which aims to link regional viticulture and wine tavern culture with the extraordinarily long history of the place.

History of the Stone Age Museum

The locals had known for a long time that the remains of ceramics repeatedly came to light during earthworks in the area . However, these finds were never given greater attention. In 1978, a farmer found in his field an undamaged stone ax ( Setzbeil ), nevertheless, as the stray Fund was interpreted as the near Zellerndorf in the 1930s rich finds from the Stone Age and the time of the Great Migration had been made. In the late 1980s, Ilse Schöndorfer and Franz Hnizdo became aware of the finds, began collecting them and organizing excavations. Excavations were carried out with Wolfgang Neubauer and the ASINOE association. The finds were presented in traveling exhibitions. After several years, the municipality, as the legal entity, decided to finance a permanent museum near the discovery sites. The museum has been located in Platt since 2007 and is enjoying increasing popularity every year.

Find situation in Platt

Platt is one of the few places for which continuous settlement from the Neolithic period to the present day has been proven. The oldest evidence comes from the note head ceramists who founded a first settlement here around 7,400 years ago. Remains of several longhouses in typical construction were found. The subsequent cultures that settled here - such as the Lengyel culture , the Aunjetitz culture or the Baalberg culture - left behind a rich complex of finds that has not yet come close to being excavated. The entire complex also includes the Celtic town on Sandberg, which was the largest Celtic settlement in Austria and, according to today's political borders, is largely in the neighboring village of Roseldorf .

The oldest ceramics found come from the so-called note head ceramists, a variation of the linear ceramic culture around 7,400 years ago. Buildings and many ceramics, which can be viewed in the museum, are also attested to the subsequent culture, the Lengyel culture. In addition to painted ceramics of rare, extremely thin quality, a complete Stone Age kitchen was found that can be viewed in the museum. One of the showpieces is a funnel bottle with eyelets (eyelet bottle), which presumably served as a drinking water dispenser. A large number of finds can also be found from the Bronze Age, where, among other things, the only known two-sided model for making jewelry was found. It is a model for spiked discs, copies of which can also be purchased in the museum.
